[[B1]] Hyundai Motor (005380.KS) is expected to lose production of up to 60,000 vehicles this year because of union strikes, after labor and management failed to reach a wage agreement. The lost output translates into nearly 2.6 trillion won ($1.9 billion) in forgone sales.<\/p>\n
[[B2]] Hyundai Motor’s labor and management held a 16th round of talks at the Ulsan plant the previous day but failed to reach a deal, the auto industry said on the 19th. The talks resumed after a 41-day gap since the 8th of last month, but the union did not narrow its differences.<\/p>\n
[[B3]] With negotiations stalling, the union began a fresh five-day walkout on the same day. It will hold partial strikes of four hours per shift on the 19th, the 20th and the 24th and 25th, and an eight-hour full walkout on the 21st. It is the first time in a decade, since 2016, that the Hyundai Motor union has staged a full-day walkout.<\/p>\n
[[B4]] The union carried out three rounds of partial strikes starting the 13th of last month. After returning from summer vacation, it continued partial strikes on the 12th to 14th of this month. Including the walkouts the union has announced following the 16th round of talks, the production halt swells to 136 hours.<\/p>\n
[[B5]] The scale of lost production caused by the strikes is snowballing. Hyundai Motor produced 460 vehicles per hour as of last year, and total lost output this summer is estimated at 62,000 vehicles. Applying an estimated average selling price of 42.65 million won per vehicle, the resulting drop in sales totals 2.6 trillion won.<\/p>\n
[[B6]] Hyundai Motor, which has struggled with weak sales all year, had hoped to turn the tide in the second half by launching flagship models such as the Grandeur and Avante, but the strikes now threaten to worsen its sales performance further. Combined domestic and overseas sales last month fell 5.1% from a year earlier, marking a 10th straight month of decline.<\/p>\n
[[B7]] Hyundai Motor recently unveiled the new Avante and is preparing to launch the new Tucson, but the prolonged strikes are hampering its overall strategy, including production planning and launch schedules.<\/p>\n
[[B8]] In this year’s negotiations, labor and management are sharply divided over union demands including a performance bonus equal to 30% of last year’s net profit, the reinstatement of members dismissed for illegal acts during past union activities, and the introduction of an extended retirement age. The company argues that it cannot accept the union’s demands because the funds available for bonuses are limited, and that there is no legal justification for reinstating the dismissed members.
