Coupang Eats is touching the pilot operation card of the “Arrival Guarantee” service, which was piloted two years ago. It is a method of paying coupons if food arrives later than the time informed to customers, and it is interpreted as an intention to increase the competitiveness of the service ahead of the direct competition with Uber.<\/p>\n

According to the industry on the 19th, Coupang Eats announced in advance its plan to test-run the arrival guarantee service last month. However, the pilot operation has not started yet, and the specific start point, region, and operation method have not yet been determined. Coupang Eats has announced that it will start piloting after August 18. Even if the pilot operation begins, it will start in a small number of regions in the beginning and examine consumer reactions before deciding whether to expand.<\/p>\n

Analysts say that Uber’s agreement to acquire Delivery Hero (DH), the German parent company of Baedal Minjok, is behind the introduction of the service. From Coupang Eats’ point of view, in addition to competition with Baemin, they are facing direct competition with Uber, which requires differentiation through service quality. “After the delivery platform has a certain size of users, not only price benefits but also service quality that can be felt during the actual use process can be competitive,” an industry official said. “The guarantee of arrival can be seen as a means to increase customer trust in that the platform directly promises delivery time.”<\/p>\n

Coupang Eats piloted a similar service in 2024, but it did not expand to a nationwide service. At that time, Coupang Eats started free delivery and focused its capabilities on expanding it nationwide, the company explained.<\/p>\n

Another reason for the reintroduction is that the current market situation has changed from two years ago. Coupang Eats quickly increased the number of users with free delivery, and now it is important to secure users and increase the competitiveness of the service itself.<\/p>\n

An official from Coupang Eats explained, “The essence of delivery service is delivery quality in the end,” adding, “We are preparing for a pilot operation to increase trust in delivery quality to customers and provide better services.”<\/p>\n

However, it remains to be seen whether the arrival guarantee will be extended to nationwide services. Coupang Eats is also in a position to decide whether to expand after confirming the effectiveness through a pilot operation this time.<\/p>\n

Baedal Minjok also introduced an arrival guarantee service earlier. After piloting the “Arrival Guarantee Project” last year, Baemin expanded its scope of operation until February this year. Since then, the operation has been suspended, but it is reported that it has left open the possibility of reopening in the future.<\/p>\n

The industry believes that competition for service differentiation between delivery apps will become fiercer at a time when Uber is scheduled to attack the domestic delivery market.
