LG Electronics (066570.KS) will build a large marine plant ecosystem in the southern seas of Korea using a new material that promotes seaweed growth. The project will span 1.5 square kilometers, about half the area of Seoul’s Yeouido district (2.9 square kilometers).<\/p>\n
LG Electronics said it signed a memorandum of understanding on a marine forest project with the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, South Gyeongsang Province and the Korea Fisheries Resources Agency at LG Smart Park in Changwon on the 2nd. The signing was attended by Choi Sung-bong, head of LG Electronics’ Built-in and Cooking Solution Business Division, Choi Hyun-hoe, director general of fisheries policy at the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, Park Il-woong, administrative vice governor of South Gyeongsang Province, and Kim Jong-deok, chairman of the Korea Fisheries Resources Agency.<\/p>\n
Over four years, from this year through 2029, LG Electronics plans to apply its self-developed functional material, “LG Marine Balance,” across 1.5 square kilometers of waters off Deokmyeong-ri in Goseong County, South Gyeongsang Province, to create a marine forest of seaweed and halophytes. The ministry, the province and the fisheries agency will support the effort, including by monitoring how LG Marine Balance affects seaweed growth and the marine environment in the Goseong waters.<\/p>\n
When it comes into contact with water, LG Marine Balance releases mineral ions, supplying the nutrients needed for seaweed and halophyte growth at a steady amount and pace. It also incorporates proprietary technology that precisely controls the volume and speed at which mineral components are released, depending on the intended use and environment. LG Marine Balance can be made in various shapes to suit different purposes, such as hard beads or flat chips.<\/p>\n
LG Electronics had earlier signed separate MOUs with Busan and with Suncheon in South Jeolla Province, and is demonstrating the material’s ecosystem restoration effects across a combined 1,500 square meters of salt marsh at the Nakdong River estuary and tidal flats at Suncheon Bay. It recently received a presidential citation at the 14th Sea Forest Day ceremony in recognition of its contribution to conserving fisheries resources.<\/p>\n
LG Electronics is developing such functional materials into a new business-to-business (B2B) venture that goes beyond simple ecological restoration. Since 1996, it has secured about 420 patents for functional materials and operates a production line with an annual capacity of 4,500 tons at LG Smart Park. It recently added a production line with an annual capacity of 2,000 tons at its manufacturing subsidiary in Haiphong, Vietnam.<\/p>\n
The company is also diversifying its lineup, with materials such as “LG Purotech,” an antibacterial and antifungal material added in small amounts to plastics, paints and rubber to curb odors and contamination caused by microbes, and “LG Mineral Wash,” an inorganic-based detergent ingredient that dramatically reduces the number of rinse cycles needed for laundry.<\/p>\n
“We will continue to advance functional material technologies that contribute to environmental conservation and the response to the climate crisis, and expand them into B2B business opportunities,” Choi said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"LG Marine Balance image.
