AllDayEnergy turns EVs into energy assets"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>HYUNDAI Motor Group has launched a new global energy services platform that will ultimately allow compatible electric vehicles to supply electricity back to homes and power grids, as the South Korean automotive giant expands its ambitions beyond vehicle manufacturing.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Called AllDayEnergy, the platform brings<a href=\"https:\/\/www.goauto.com.au\/hyundai.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u00a0Hyundai<\/a>\u00a0Motor Group\u2019s existing Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) programs under a single global identity, encompassing Hyundai, Kia, and potentially Genesis electric vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Rather than introducing a new vehicle technology, AllDayEnergy provides the umbrella under which the group will progressively deploy smart charging (V1G), Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) and Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) services in different markets.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The first stage will be relatively straightforward, with V1G smart charging allowing an EV\u2019s charging schedule to respond automatically to electricity prices, grid demand and customer preferences.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>More significant capabilities will follow.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>V2G enables electricity stored in an EV battery to be fed back into the electricity network, potentially allowing owners to participate in utility energy programs, while V2H allows the vehicle battery to supply a household, including providing back-up electricity during a power outage.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Essentially, Hyundai Motor Group wants to turn the substantial batteries already sitting in customers\u2019 driveways into distributed energy storage rather than leaving them solely as a means of powering a vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Governments may also benefit financially through not having to invest in as many so called \u201cmega\u201d batteries to sustain the grid.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Customers could charge when electricity is cheapest, retain the energy for driving or household use, or potentially return electricity to the grid when demand and prices are higher.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The strategy also indicates Hyundai Motor Group\u2019s intention to re-position itself increasingly as an energy services provider rather than simply an EV manufacturer.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we launch AllDayEnergy through our Kia App later this year, we will be taking a significant step towards establishing our identity as a smart energy service provider,\u201d said Hyundai Motor Group vice-president and head of EV Energy Strategy Group, Woong Tae Hwang.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will continue to expand our AllDayEnergy service globally, allowing customers to seamlessly optimise their energy usage, reduce their energy costs, and contribute to grid sustainability.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>AllDayEnergy will initially be integrated into the Kia App in the United Kingdom, starting with V1G smart charging, before Hyundai Motor Group expands the service into other European markets, the United States, and South Korea.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Services will ultimately be accessed through Hyundai and Kia vehicle apps rather than requiring customers to use a separate AllDayEnergy application.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The group has already established much of the technical groundwork through V2X trials and commercial programs in several markets.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In South Korea it is testing V2G technology on Jeju Island, while V2H services have been deployed in the United States to provide emergency household power during events including major wildfires.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Hyundai Motor Group has also introduced V2G and smart-charging programs in the Netherlands, where vehicle charging can be adjusted according to dynamic electricity pricing.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The group\u2019s E-GMP electric vehicle architecture also provides a technical foundation for broader bidirectional energy applications.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Vehicles such as the Hyundai Ioniq 5 already demonstrate the principle through vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality, which allows electricity from the traction battery to operate external appliances and equipment.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>V2H and V2G take that capability substantially further by integrating the vehicle with household electrical systems and the electricity network.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, their rollout is considerably more complicated than V1G smart charging.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Bi-directional charging requires compatible charging hardware, appropriate home electrical installations and integration with individual electricity networks, while regulatory requirements and utility arrangements differ significantly between markets.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That explains Hyundai Motor Group\u2019s decision to launch AllDayEnergy with smart charging before progressively introducing its bidirectional functions.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>V2H could ultimately be one of the more tangible benefits for EV owners.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Rather than purchasing a separate household battery solely for back-up purposes, a compatible EV could potentially provide a substantially larger energy reserve from the battery already installed in the vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>During an outage, electricity stored in the vehicle could be used to maintain essential household loads, while under normal conditions the same system could allow customers to charge during lower-cost periods and draw on that energy later.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>V2G extends the concept to the wider electricity network, allowing potentially thousands of connected vehicles to operate collectively as distributed energy storage.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>At times of high electricity demand, participating vehicles could supply energy back into the grid, before replenishing their batteries when demand falls or renewable generation increases.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Hyundai Motor Group says the objective is to give customers greater control over energy costs while simultaneously supporting electricity-grid stability.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The South Korean group is not alone in pursuing the opportunity.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>BMW, Ford, Honda, and Nissan established ChargeScape in 2024 as a platform connecting EVs with electricity utilities, with Rivian, Tesla, and Stellantis subsequently joining the venture, while General Motors operates its separate GM Energy business covering home energy management, stationary storage and bi-directional charging.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>AllDayEnergy therefore represents more than a rebranding exercise for Hyundai Motor Group.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Bringing smart charging, household backup and grid integration together under one platform provides the group with the foundation for an energy ecosystem in which its EVs remain commercially useful even when they are parked.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For Australian customers, however, there is no confirmed timetable although Hyundai Motor Company Australia\u2019s senior manager of future mobility and government relations Scott Nargar says trials of a new system using the latest \u201cdash 20\u201d protocol will be held before the end of the year.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have been working with government, the CSIRO, all stake holders to introduce the right firmware for AllDayEnergy to be implemented safely into Australia,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to put control of the technology back into the consumer\u2019s hands while making the system safer than the \u2018hacks\u2019 that are (currently) being used.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Hyundai Motor Group has so far identified the UK as its first AllDayEnergy market, followed by expansion across Europe, the US, and South Korea, with Australia not included in the announced roll-out plans.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The technology could nevertheless have particular relevance locally as household solar and battery storage continue to expand and bidirectional EV charging develops as another potential source of distributed energy storage.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>At the moment, AllDayEnergy\u2019s immediate role is comparatively simple: automatically determining when an EV should charge.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Its longer-term significance lies in what happens in the other direction \u2013 turning the EV from an electricity consumer into an energy source capable of helping power the house, and potentially the grid, while sitting in the driveway.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"HYUNDAI Motor Group has launched a
