Hyundai Steel plans to hold a groundbreaking event for its $5.8 billion Louisiana mill on Friday, Sept. 4, according to reports.\n<\/p>\n

Pre-construction activities have been underway over recent months as trucks have been transporting materials to the site, which is located in the RiverPlex MegaPark<\/a>, along the west bank of the Mississippi River in Ascension Parish near Donaldsonville.\n<\/p>\n

Both state and local officials have touted the industrial park for its access to the river, rail and air, as it is located between the Baton Rouge and New Orleans areas.<\/p>\n

The South Korean automaker has been among multiple companies that have announced plans to build in the area.\n<\/p>\n

CF Industries, which has proposed a $4 billion blue ammonia project adjacent to the steel mill site in the Modeste area, reportedly will begin construction this month, with a targeted startup in 2029.\n<\/p>\n

In March 2025, Louisiana Economic Development<\/a> first publicly announced Hyundai\u2019s project, which officials expect will create more than 1,300 direct new jobs, as well as thousands of indirect jobs to the region.\n<\/p>\n

At the time, President Donald Trump hosted a news conference at the White House to unveil the plans.\n<\/p>\n

The largest portion of steel manufactured in the state will be transported to Hyundai Motor Company\u2019s vehicle manufacturing facilities throughout the country, according to the LED release at the time.\n<\/p>\n

Training center construction ongoing\n<\/p>\n

Earlier this year, Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry and officials broke ground on a new River Parishes Community College<\/a> workforce training center, in partnership with Hyundai and state and local leaders, along Hwy. 945 in Donaldsonville.\n<\/p>\n

The campus has a targeted opening set for the fourth quarter of 2027, according to a separate LED news release.\n<\/p>\n

Possible growth nearby studied\n<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, local officials have been anticipating the possibility of growth due to the expansions in the industrial corridor.\n<\/p>\n

During the Aug. 12 meeting, the Ascension Parish planning commission received an update on the west bank overlay status report.\n<\/p>\n

The plan includes the proposed extension of Hwy. 3127 from nearby Assumption and St. James parishes into the Donaldsonville area.\n<\/p>\n

The highway would provide another route, other than the current connection from Hwy. 70 to Hwy. 1, which stretches north toward Iberville Parish and the Baton Rouge area.\n<\/p>\n

A public open house event has been planned for the courthouse in Donaldsonville, the parish seat, later this month.\n<\/p>\n

Public hearing\n<\/p>\n

The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality has set a public hearing for Hyundai Steel\u2019s proposed air permit.\n<\/p>\n

According to the LDEQ website, the hearing will be Sept. 1 at 6 p.m. in the Lemann Memorial Center, 1100 Clay St., Donaldsonville.\n<\/p>\n

Comments can be submitted via the site through the public notices section.\n<\/p>\n
