South Gyeongsang Province and LG Electronics will create a 1.5-square-kilometer marine forest off the coast of Goseong, investing 1.3 billion won ($940,000) through 2029 to halt sea desertification and restore the marine ecosystem.<\/p>\n
The province signed a public-private cooperation agreement for the marine forest project on the 20th with the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries and the Korea Fisheries Resources Agency at LG Electronics’ Smart Park in Changwon.<\/p>\n
Under the agreement, LG Electronics will build the marine forest in the Deokmyeong waters off Hai-myeon in Goseong County and handle its long-term maintenance. The work includes restoring rock surfaces affected by sea desertification, cultivating seaweed beds, removing sea urchins and other grazing animals, and collecting marine debris.<\/p>\n
A marine forest is created by planting seaweed in coastal waters to provide spawning grounds and habitats for marine life. It has recently drawn attention for its value as blue carbon, a carbon sink. Blue carbon absorbs carbon through marine ecosystems up to 50 times faster than green carbon, such as land-based forests.<\/p>\n
The province expects the marine forest to serve as a spawning and habitat ground for key fish species along the southern coast, helping restore coastal fisheries resources and boost fishing household incomes.<\/p>\n
The parties to the agreement pledged to cooperate on contributing to carbon neutrality by expanding carbon sinks, restoring fisheries resources and enhancing biodiversity, sustaining the creation and maintenance of marine forests, and raising public awareness around Sea Forest Day on May 10.<\/p>\n
