(PHOTO\/AP)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chinadailyasia.com\/hk\/article\/626711#Samsung-forecasts-profit-to-triple-to-record-high-as-it-rides-AI-boom-2026-01-08\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Samsung Electronics Co<\/a> plans to return as much as 110 trillion won ($79 billion) to shareholders, joining rival SK Hynix Inc in handing investors a chunk of the windfall generated by the AI rush.<\/p>\n<p>The world\u2019s biggest memory maker is set to hold a board meeting at around 4 pm local time on Friday to discuss shareholder returns ranging between 90 trillion won and 110 trillion won, a person familiar with the matter said.<\/p>\n<p>That would make the package one of the company\u2019s most significant capital-return initiatives, the person said, asking not to be named discussing private information. A Samsung representative declined to comment.<\/p>\n<p>Samsung\u2019s shares pared earlier losses and surged as much as 3.9 percent in Seoul trading. Samsung\u2019s preferred shares \u2014 which have no voting rights \u2014 soared as much as 9.1 percent on the Korea Exchange. The potential scale of the package helped the won lead gains against the dollar among peers in Asia in the morning.<\/p>\n<p>The moves by the two suppliers of memory to Nvidia Corp \u2014 and key architects of the AI buildout \u2014 underscore growing investor pressure to share more of the cash generated by the boom.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/korea\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/286089fa9a8ccf3475dd59a2aa2ac39f.png\"\/><\/p>\n<p>SK Hynix\u2019s 40 trillion won buyback plan has added pressure on Samsung to return more cash to shareholders, who point to the electronics giant\u2019s swelling reserves. Such shares have also traded at \u201ca significant discount\u201d, according to Albert Yong, managing partner and chief investment officer at Petra Capital Management.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe real question is how much is incremental and how much comes through buybacks versus dividends,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>While shareholder return plans typically comprise some mix of dividends and buybacks, the specifics of Samsung\u2019s plan weren\u2019t immediately clear.<\/p>\n<p>Still, Samsung\u2019s move provides a \u201cmeaningful cushion to the share price\u201d, against macroeconomic uncertainty, said Jung In Yun, chief executive officer at Fibonacci Asset Management Global.<\/p>\n<p>Investors are closely watching developments from the day\u2019s board meeting, which was reported earlier by the Nikkei.
