The company will sell part of its stake in Samsung Display for about 4.45 trillion Korean won ($3.21 billion). The funds may support investments in North American energy storage systems (ESS) and next-gen battery technologies.

The funds may help Samsung SDI expand its ESS business

Samsung SDI will transfer 13,088,235 Samsung Display shares to Samsung Display for roughly 4.45 trillion won. The shares represent around 33% of Samsung SDI’s total holdings in Samsung Display. As a result, its stake in Samsung Display will drop from 15.2% to 10.2%.

The Korean battery maker said the transaction aims to secure funds for future growth, though it has not revealed exactly how it will allocate the money. Industry watchers expect a key investment area to be the growing North American ESS market.

Samsung SDI is also changing the role of its US battery facilities. The company recently took full control of the Synergy Cells joint venture in Indiana after acquiring General Motors’ 49.99% stake. Samsung SDI and GM originally established the New Carlisle plant, which is being built with an annual production capacity of 27GWh. After taking full ownership, Samsung SDI now plans to make not only EV batteries but also ESS batteries at the facility.

🎁 SammyGuru Rewards

Get free Bonus Gear with your next Galaxy

Join SammyGuru Rewards — free. The company aims to reach 30GWh of ESS capacity in North America by the end of 2026.

Beyond ESS, Samsung SDI is investing in next-gen battery technologies. The company has been developing production lines for LFP and all-solid-state batteries, targeting future demand from ESS, UPS systems, humanoid robots, and aerospace applications.

Basically, the latest cash injection could help Samsung SDI invest in these areas as its battery business recovers from the EV slowdown.

Written by

Binay Konwar

Binay Konwar started his blogging journey in 2014 and has since written plenty of tech articles.
