Yonhap News

SK Securities (001510.KS), the brokerage handling SK hynix’s (000660.KS) 40 trillion won ($28.8 billion) share buyback, surged for a second straight day. The gains are seen reflecting expectations for fee income at SK Securities, which was selected as the intermediary after SK hynix announced a shareholder return plan to buy back a large block of shares and cancel all of them.

SK Securities closed at 2,955 won on the 21st, up 145 won, or 5.16%, from the previous session, according to the Korea Exchange on the 22nd. After opening at 2,920 won, the stock spiked to 3,555 won shortly after the open, reaching an intraday gain of 26.51%, before giving back much of the advance as profit-taking emerged.

The stock had also closed up 29.79% at 2,810 won the previous day. Compared with its closing price of 2,165 won on the 19th, before SK hynix disclosed the buyback plan, the shares had risen 36.5% in two days. Based on the intraday high on the 21st, they jumped 64.2%.

The immediate trigger was SK hynix’s large-scale shareholder return decision. After the market closed on the 19th, SK hynix decided to acquire about 40 trillion won worth of treasury shares and cancel all of them. Buying back and canceling treasury shares reduces the number of outstanding shares, raising the per-share value for existing shareholders. Market attention concentrated on the fact that the company was pursuing aggressive shareholder returns on the back of record-high earnings.

SK Securities was selected as the entrusted investment brokerage for the buyback. Handling a transaction as large as 40 trillion won has raised expectations for increased brokerage income, which appears to have stirred short-term buying.

Still, the fee amount SK Securities will actually receive has not been disclosed. Some point out that the impact on earnings needs to be confirmed, since the size of the buyback does not translate directly into the brokerage’s profit. The stock’s sharp retreat from its intraday high on the 21st, after two days of steep gains, is also seen as reflecting this uncertainty.

SK Securities.
