US President Donald Trump said Wednesday that he knows North Korean leader Kim Jong Un \u201cvery well\u201d and suggested Kim would be \u201cfine\u201d as long as the United States has a \u201csmart president.\u201d<\/p>\n
Asked whether he has been exchanging letters with Kim, Trump declined to answer directly but said the two leaders have a good relationship.<\/p>\n
\u201cI get along with him very well,\u201d Trump said, adding that North Korea has \u201c57 very powerful nuclear weapons.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cShould have never allowed it to happen,\u201d Trump said, arguing that North Korea should not have been permitted to acquire nuclear weapons. \u201cWhen I was president, I wouldn’t have allowed it, but he’s got them.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI know Kim Jong Un very well, and he’s going to be fine,\u201d he said. \u201cAs long as we have a smart president, he’s going to be fine. If we have a dumb president, then he’s probably not going to be so fine,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Asked whether he expects to meet Kim later this year, Trump replied: \u201cYeah, I will be.\u201d<\/p>\n
Trump was later asked if his goal in North Korea is still “denuclearization,” to which he responded: \u201cI don’t want to talk about that, but I do have a good relationship with Kim Jong Un.\u201d<\/p>\n
“I didn’t like the fact that we’re doing these massive military exercises really against North Korea when I’m friendly with him,” he said. \u201cI don’t see anything happening for certainly two and a half years, it’s not going to happen with me.\u201d<\/p>\n
