North Korea has criticized Japan\u2019s planned increase in defense
\nspending, warning that Tokyo\u2019s record military budget could further
\nescalate tensions and instability in East Asia.<\/p>\n
In a commentary published Saturday, North Korea\u2019s state-run
\nKorean Central News Agency (KCNA) said Japan\u2019s Defense Ministry
\nplans to request around 8.9 trillion yen ($56 billion) for fiscal
\n2027. The final allocation could rise to approximately 10 trillion
\nyen ($63 billion) during the budget approval process.<\/p>\n
Pyongyang accused Tokyo of using concerns over regional security
\nthreats to expand the capabilities of Japan\u2019s Self-Defense Forces
\nand gradually transform them into what it described as \u201cpreemptive
\nattack forces.\u201d<\/p>\n
According to KCNA, Japan\u2019s proposed defense spending includes
\nthe development of underwater-launched hypersonic missiles, the
\ndeployment of attack drones, the integration of artificial
\nintelligence into military command systems and the acquisition of
\nadditional long-range missiles.<\/p>\n
North Korea also criticized Japan\u2019s procurement of long-range
\nstrike weapons, including US-made Tomahawk cruise missiles, arguing
\nthat such acquisitions demonstrate Tokyo\u2019s departure from its
\npostwar pacifist policy.<\/p>\n
Japan\u2019s planned spending forms part of its broader five-year
\ndefense buildup program, which allocates 43 trillion yen ($270
\nbillion) for fiscal 2023\u20132027.<\/p>\n
Tokyo has steadily increased defense spending since adopting a
\nrevised national security strategy in 2022, citing growing security
\nchallenges posed by China, North Korea and Russia.<\/p>\n
Japan\u2019s expanding military capabilities have prompted concern
\namong some analysts that the buildup could contribute to a broader
\narms race in East Asia. China has also repeatedly criticized
\nJapan\u2019s increased defense spending and the expansion of its
\nlong-range strike capabilities.<\/p>\n
