Yonhap News

A heat wave has returned to Seoul after rains across the country subsided, prompting a heat wave advisory across the entire city. The Seoul city government has reactivated its comprehensive heat wave response center and is stepping up efforts to manage heat-related damage.

The Korea Meteorological Administration said it issued the citywide heat wave advisory as of 11 a.m. on the 23rd. This comes four days after an earlier heat alert covering all of Seoul was lifted at 6 p.m. on the 19th of this month. A heat wave advisory is issued when the perceived temperature exceeds 33 degrees Celsius (91 degrees Fahrenheit) for two or more consecutive days, or when heat-related damage is expected. Seoul’s perceived temperature was forecast to rise to around 33 degrees Celsius on the same day.

The city plans to reactivate the comprehensive heat wave response center and work with district offices and related agencies to protect residents and manage vulnerable facilities. The city will operate response teams by area, including a situation coordination team, a livelihood support team, an energy recovery team and a medical and disease-control team, to prepare for the heat.

The comprehensive response center monitors weather conditions, the status of any damage and the protection of vulnerable groups and facilities, and manages response activities. The 25 district offices will also operate their own situation rooms, maintain heat response systems such as stockpiling cooling and emergency relief supplies, and cooperate with the city.

To prevent loss of life from the heat, the city will contact vulnerable older adults to check on their well-being and, if they cannot be reached, will visit them in person to check their health. It will also expand staffing to manage areas where homeless people gather on the streets.

The city also plans to provide residents with safety guidelines to prevent heat-related harm. Using various facilities and functions it operates, including electronic display boards, its website and safety text alerts, the city will announce guidelines for heat conditions such as refraining from outdoor activity, staying hydrated and resting during the hottest hours.

“After the rains stopped, temperatures rose again amid high humidity, triggering a heat wave advisory across all of Seoul,” said Choi Jin-seok, head of the Seoul city government’s disaster and safety management office. “We will closely monitor weather conditions and thoroughly carry out heat wave measures in each area, including protecting vulnerable groups and operating shelters from the heat.”

Citizens walk in front of Gwanghwamun in Jongno-gu, Seoul, on the 3rd, as sweltering heat and a heat…

[3
65920,8120,51592,112,65921,65919,17008
post-129031","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-seoul","tag-heat-wave-response-center","tag-korea-meteorological-administration","tag-perceived-temperature","tag-seoul","tag-seoul-city-government","tag-seoul-heat-wave-advisory","tag-vulnerable-groups
["GET
