Samsung Electronics is bringing heat pump boiler production back to South Korea, with plans to manufacture more than 100,000 units annually. The move is part of a strategy to accelerate expansion in the domestic heat pump market in response to the South Korean government’s heating electrification policy.<\/p>\n
Samsung Electronics announced on August 24 that it has established a 2,132-square-meter EHS heat pump boiler production line at the second campus of its Gwangju Plant in Gwangju Metropolitan City and began trial production on August 19. After verifying process stability and product performance, the company plans to commence full-scale mass production in late September.<\/p>\n
Samsung Electronics is the first heat pump manufacturer participating in the government’s heating electrification program to relocate overseas production lines to South Korea. The new production line has an annual capacity of more than 100,000 units, with all output designated for the domestic market.<\/p>\n
Beyond finished product assembly, the company plans to progressively increase the domestic share of core components and key manufacturing processes. The strategy involves expanding participation from South Korean partner companies to strengthen the supply chain and contribute to the Gwangju regional economy.<\/p>\n
The Gwangju Plant has served as a key production hub for Samsung Electronics’ premium home appliances, including refrigerators, washing machines, and air conditioners. Samsung Electronics will leverage the accumulated manufacturing expertise and quality control capabilities at this facility to strengthen its end-to-end response system spanning development, manufacturing, and quality management. The company also plans to rapidly incorporate domestic consumer needs and evolving residential environments into its products.<\/p>\n
The EHS heat pump boiler supplies heating and hot water using heat extracted from outdoor air combined with electricity. It achieves a Seasonal Coefficient of Performance (SCOP) of 4.9 at 35\u00b0C outlet water conditions, meaning approximately 4.9 units of heat energy are produced for every unit of electrical energy consumed. It offers higher energy efficiency and lower carbon emissions compared to conventional fossil fuel boilers. When paired with residential solar power installations, it can also reduce electricity costs.<\/p>\n
Alongside domestic production, Samsung Electronics is expanding distribution and demonstration initiatives. The company supplied products to Jeju Island’s heating electrification program this year and plans to participate in the second phase covering 1,418 households in the second half of the year.<\/p>\n
In Yangpyeong, Chungju, and Namhae, the company is evaluating heating and hot water performance and energy efficiency across different regional climates and housing types. At Jeju Island and Samsung C&T’s residential research institute in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province, the company is testing the EHS All-in-One, which integrates cooling, heating, and hot water in a single system. This research aims to extend heat pump applications beyond single-family homes to apartments and other multi-unit housing.<\/p>\n
