But Korean powerhouse Samsung Biologics has somehow avoided the slide.<\/p>\n<p>The company has <a href=\"https:\/\/samsungbiologics.com\/media\/company-news\/samsung-biologics-reports-fourth-quarter-and-fiscal-year-2024-financial-results\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a> another robust increase in its top line, with a 23% sales boost, from 3.69 trillion Korean won in 2023 ($2.8 billion) to 4.55 trillion Korean won ($3.3 billion).<\/p>\n<p>In a release, CEO John Rim credited Samsung Bio\u2019s \u201cexpanded collaboration with both pharma and biotech companies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have been able to continue delivering on our commitments by investing in capacity, modality, and geographic expansion,\u201d Rim added.<\/p>\n<p>The company expanded its roster of clients from 14 of the world\u2019s top 20 pharma companies in 2023 to 17 last year. Additionally, at its huge complex in Incheon, the company found growth through \u201cincreased contribution from Plant 4 and full utilization of Plants 1 through 3,\u201d Samsung said.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, the company <a href=\"https:\/\/engkind.krx.co.kr\/common\/disclsviewer.do?method=search&amp;acptNo=20250114000042&amp;docno=&amp;formProcsCd=070&amp;language=english\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">revealed<\/a> in a regulatory filing that it had signed, with an unidentified European company, the largest contract in company history, at 2.1 trillion Korean won ($1.4 billion).<\/p>\n<p>Also last week, during the J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference, Samsung revealed that its board of directors was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fiercepharma.com\/manufacturing\/jpm25-samsung-biologics-expansion-continues-plan-build-its-6th-plant\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">considering<\/a> a plan to build its sixth plant at the facility to respond to the \u201cgrowing demand for biologics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samsung said on Wednesday that it expects to keep the momentum rolling in 2025 as its fifth plant is set to become operational in April of this year. During the year, Samsung expects Plants 4 and 5 to contribute between 35% and 40% of the company\u2019s revenue, with that increasing to up to 50% of the company\u2019s sales in 2026.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe expect another year of growth through the opening of Plant 5, launch of ADC services, and continued investment in innovative technologies and sustainability,\u201d Rim said.<\/p>\n<p>As for the fourth quarter of last year, sales were up 17%, from 1.073 trillion Korean won ($802 million) to 1.256 trillion Korean won ($876 million).<\/p>\n<p>After the end of the pandemic, many CDMOs experienced a \u201crevenue cliff,\u201d as companies found difficulty replacing contracts to provide COVID products. Around the same time, biotech funding dried up.<\/p>\n<p>The shortfall is still prevalent as CDMO giants <a href=\"https:\/\/ir.thermofisher.com\/investors\/news-events\/news\/news-details\/2024\/Thermo-Fisher-Scientific-Reports-Third-Quarter-2024-Results\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Thermo Fisher<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesswire.com\/news\/home\/20240507163487\/en\/Catalent-Inc.-Reports-Third-Quarter-Fiscal-2024-Results\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Catalent<\/a> reported sales declines in the third quarter of 2024. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lonza.com\/news\/2024-07-25-06-55#:~:text=Basel%2C%20Switzerland%2C%2025%20July%202024,demand%20for%20commercial%20CDMO%20services.\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lonza<\/a> also revealed a drop-off in sales in the first half of 2024.
