K-pop girl group AtHeart has been traveling through time \u2013 or at least their music has. The group recently released their second single, \u201c3! 4!,\u201d from their global remake series, TIME TRAVEL PROJECT.<\/p>\n
Originally released by Korean group Roo\u2019Ra in 1996, \u201c3!4!\u201d was one of the most popular songs in South Korea at the time, a summer classic. AtHeart decided to make it their own, adding electric pianos and soft melodies to the upbeat song. The girls \u2013 consisting of members Michi, Arin, Katelyn, Bome, Seohyeon, Aurora, and Nahyun \u2013 were born over a decade after the song was first released (the age ranges from 16-19), but listened to the songs through their parents\u2019 generation.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy parents listened to it, and really loved it,\u201d Nahyun says over Zoom during their press day in Los Angeles last month. \u201cI listened to it growing up. So I was really happy when I heard we were going to remake the song, and I felt so honored to continue on the legacy through the generations, and mix AtHeart\u2019s own vibe into the song.\u201d<\/p>\n
To add to this legacy song, AtHeart\u2019s team brought in Lee Hyun Do, one of the original songwriters, to participate in the new arrangement.<\/p>\n
When Arin told her parents that she was remaking the song with the group, they didn\u2019t believe her. It was a shock that the girls \u2013 especially in their generation \u2013 would know what the song was. She says bluntly, \u201cTheir reaction wasn\u2019t that big, because they [didn’t believe me].\u201d<\/p>\n
But that was the girls and their team\u2019s purpose for recreating the song and the overall project: to \u201cintroduce a classic to a new generation while offering longtime listeners a fresh take on a familiar favorite.\u201d Their goal was simple: blend the past and the present, and make it pop!<\/p>\n
The girls previously released \u201cSay It,\u201d<\/a> a reimagined version of the Swedish rock band The Cardigans\u2019 1996 international smash hit, \u201cLovefool.\u201d Though the girls were familiar with the original song, they knew it best as part of the soundtrack to Baz Luhrmann\u2019s 1996 version of Romeo and Juliet \u2013 starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes.<\/p>\n \u201cThe first time I heard \u2018Say It,\u2019 it was a really catchy song that I kept playing nonstop,\u201d Aurora admits. \u201cThe \u2018Say It\u2019 part in the chorus just stuck in my head for a while. I obviously knew \u2018Lovefool\u2019 by The Cardigans because it\u2019s a very popular song. Personally, at school, I watched Romeo and Juliet, the 1996 version, which was the first time I heard it. It was a full circle moment, and it was fun working on it.\u201d<\/p>\n Below, the girls talk about their first anniversary of their debut, the TIME TRAVEL PROJECT, and what to expect next.<\/p>\n Laura Sirikul: With this TIME TRAVEL PROJECT, what songs would you add to the time capsule that you\u2019d like to remake? It doesn\u2019t have to be from 1996<\/a> \u2013 any era, really.<\/p>\n AURORA: It would be really fun if we could do a remake or sample of a song from Japan. I think idols and artists from the \u201880s and \u201890s were really iconic \u2013 so it\u2019ll be fun to do remake versions. I also want to do a remake version of any KARA songs because they were the first artists that made me fall in love with K-pop. I love all of their songs. I feel we match their kind of vibe as well. I think that would be fun.<\/p>\n BOME: Does it have to be from the \u201890s?<\/p>\n Sirikul: No. Any.<\/p>\n ARIN: I was talking to Bome earlier about this. I want to challenge ourselves. I want to try songs like \u201cWDA\u201d (\u201cWhole Different Animal) or \u201cDirtyWork\u201d by aespa.<\/p>\n AURORA: If I were to choose one single song \u2013 this song went viral last year. It\u2019s a Japanese song called \u201cAoi Sangoshou\u201d by Seiko Matsuda (from 1980). I don\u2019t know the exact English title, but it\u2019s one of her very popular songs that went viral last year. We all match that vibe, and it\u2019s similar to the vibe of \u201c3! 4!\u201d by Roo\u2019Ra. That would be fun.<\/p>\n KATELYN: If I think about Filipino artists. I know there is a Filipino member in the Black Eyed Peas [APL.DE.AP], and I like their song. All of us can do it, but I don\u2019t know. If there were a Filipino artist I wanted to remake a song for, I’d immediately think of the Black Eyed Peas.<\/p>\n NAHYUN: TWICE is the group I have listened to since elementary school. So after we grow more as artists, I want to cover TWICE or remake a TWICE song.<\/p>\n MICHI: It was really fun doing \u201cSay It.\u201d When I think about some bands that I like, I think of Fleetwood Mac and the Cranberries. So something that takes from that kind of vibe. I\u2019d love to reimagine those in our colors.<\/p>\n SEOHYEON: Like Nahyun, I listened to a lot of TWICE and Red Velvet since elementary school. So, I hope to remake their songs one day.<\/p>\n
