The selloff was led by Samsung Electronics, which plunged as much as 8.61 percent after unveiling a shareholder return plan that analysts said fell short of market expectations.

Foreign investors were net sellers of 3.15 trillion won (approximately $2.3 billion), while institutions offloaded 1.05 trillion won (approximately $757.7 million). Retail investors were the sole buyers, scooping up a net 2.87 trillion won (approximately $2.1 billion) in shares.

The decline was broad-based, with seven of the top 10 stocks by market capitalization on the main board trading lower. SK hynix reversed early gains to fall 1.73 percent, while SK Square dropped 3.65 percent, Hyundai Motor slipped 1.20 percent, Samsung C&T tumbled 7.71 percent, Samsung Life Insurance cratered 11.11 percent, and KB Financial Group declined 1.28 percent.

On the upside, Samsung Electro-Mechanics edged up 0.15 percent, LG Energy Solution rose 4.08 percent, Samsung Biologics gained 1.03 percent, and Hanwha Aerospace advanced 1.57 percent.

The selling pressure reflected disappointment over Samsung Electronics’ shareholder return announcement. The company pledged a special dividend of 30 trillion won (approximately $21.7 billion) as part of a broader 90 trillion to 110 trillion won (approximately $79.5 billion) program. But Kim Ki-baek, an analyst at Shinhan Securities, said the package did not exceed market expectations and was being treated as a spent catalyst.

“Samsung Electronics announced shareholder returns of 90 trillion to 110 trillion won, including a 30 trillion won special dividend, but it failed to surpass market expectations and is being perceived as material that has already been exhausted,” he said. “Meanwhile, SK hynix is holding up relatively well, and rotation is occurring into defense and secondary battery names.”

By sector, metals, transportation and warehousing, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, non-metals, entertainment and culture, and medical precision equipment posted gains. Insurance, electric and electronics, distribution, manufacturing, financials, and securities were among the laggards.

In contrast to the main board, the KOSDAQ index climbed 12.87 points, or 1.60 percent, to 814.81 as of the same time. Foreigners and institutions were net buyers on the junior market, purchasing 112.7 billion won and 41.5 billion won respectively, while retail investors sold a net 146.5 billion won.

Eight of the top 10 KOSDAQ stocks by market value advanced, with Alteogen, EcoPro, EcoPro BM, Jusung Engineering, Wonik IPS, HLB, LEENO Industrial, and PharmaResearch all gaining ground. Only Rainbow Robotics and EO Technics declined.

The divergence between the two markets highlighted a rotation into smaller-cap and growth-oriented names as investors reassessed large-cap technology valuations. The morning session showed a similar pattern, with KOSPI down 137.79 points, or 1.99 percent, at 6,775.16 around 11:30 a.m., while KOSDAQ was up 17.71 points, or 2.21 percent, at 819.65.

The sharp decline in Samsung Electronics shares underscored investor skepticism about whether the company’s capital return initiatives can offset concerns about its competitive position in advanced memory chips and foundry operations. The stock’s slide also weighed heavily on the broader index given its outsized weighting.

Market participants will be watching whether the rotation into KOSDAQ names continues and whether institutional selling on the main board abates in the coming sessions. The won-dollar exchange rate also flashed on trading screens across Seoul dealing rooms, though currency moves were not the primary driver of Monday’s equity action.

South Korean stocks tumbled on Monday as a massive shareholder return package from Samsung Electronics failed to impress…

[18
406,37620,66911,336,335,733,127,8584,276,19189,6446,275
post-131185","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-samsung-electronics","tag-alteogen","tag-ecopro","tag-kim-ki-baek","tag-kosdaq","tag-kospi","tag-lg-energy-solution","tag-samsung","tag-samsung-ct","tag-samsung-electronics","tag-samsung-life-insurance","tag-shinhan-securities","tag-sk-hynix
["GET
