Bitcoin, which has climbed above its 200-day moving average on the back of a recent rebound, has more room to rise from here than gold, according to a Wall Street technical analyst.<\/p>\n

Bitcoin Builds a Base and Begins a Breakout<\/p>\n

Katie Stockton, founder of the independent Wall Street research firm Fairlead Strategies, said bitcoin currently has more upside potential than gold, CNBC reported on the 25th. She spoke on the network’s program “The Exchange.”<\/p>\n

Bitcoin is no longer oversold but has not yet moved into overbought territory, Stockton said. She said bitcoin entered a basing process in June. A retest of the lows followed in July, and a genuine breakout is now underway, according to her reading.<\/p>\n

The recent rebound has taken bitcoin above its 200-day moving average. That price level had acted as resistance in May, stopping bitcoin’s advance almost exactly. “Coming off of those lows, short-term momentum has clearly gotten very strong, and intermediate-term momentum has improved as well,” Stockton said.<\/p>\n

She added that fully forming a bottom usually takes time and can involve several retests of the lows along the way. But the fact that further gains have emerged immediately after the resistance level was cleared supports the breakout signal, she explained. Bitcoin has indeed staged a strong and rapid rally this week, pushing past the $80,000 mark.<\/p>\n

Different Length of Decline for Gold, and a Diverging Outlook<\/p>\n

Stockton said gold’s situation differs from bitcoin’s. Gold’s intermediate-term downtrend began later than bitcoin’s, and its current rebound looks less like a full trend reversal than a countertrend rally within a downtrend, she said. Gold is also holding intermediate-term upward momentum and can be expected to rise further, but it is more likely than bitcoin to run into resistance sooner, she projected.<\/p>\n

The difference between the two assets stems from how long each declined before rebounding. Bitcoin’s long-term oversold signal came after a relatively long decline, giving it enough time to build a proper base. Gold’s decline, by contrast, was relatively short, leaving its rebound with less capacity to continue than bitcoin’s.<\/p>\n

Bitcoin therefore still has room to rise before it is judged to have gained too much, while gold’s rally is nearing its limits, in Stockton’s view.
