Preparations by South Korean banks are accelerating as the Bank of Korea’s (BOK) central bank digital currency (CBDC) and deposit token pilot, known as “Project Hangang,” enters its second phase. Following the BOK’s launch of a tender for comprehensive consulting on commercialization, participating banks have also begun building their internal systems.<\/p>\n

According to financial industry sources on Wednesday, banks have recently started selecting external vendors for the second phase of Project Hangang.<\/p>\n

LG CNS was previously selected as the main contractor overseeing the common infrastructure, continuing its role from the first phase. Each bank has now begun preparing its own systems and services to link with that infrastructure. Some banks have already completed their vendor selection, sources said. “Alongside the common system, preparations at the individual bank level are proceeding in parallel,” a banking industry official said. “We are at the stage of moving into full-scale development after securing vendors.”<\/p>\n
