While double-leveraged products tracking the KOSPI 200 are available domestically, investor demand is increasingly flowing to U.S. markets in search of higher leverage ratios.

According to data from the Korea Securities Depository’s securities information portal SEIBro on August 26, South Korean investors’ buy settlement volume in the Direxion Daily MSCI South Korea Bull 3X ETF (KORU) totaled $397.26 million (approximately ₩550 billion) from July 26 through August 25, ranking ninth among all overseas equities.

KORU is a U.S.-listed ETF that tracks three times the daily return of the Morgan Stanley Capital International (MSCI) Korea Index. In effect, South Korean investors are converting won into dollars to place leveraged bets on a Korean stock market rally through the U.S. market. The aggressive demand for higher returns appears to have spread to overseas-listed products as both the strength and volatility of the Korean stock market have expanded simultaneously.

Domestically, investors can trade representative leveraged ETFs that track two times the daily return of the KOSPI 200. Over the same period, retail investors made net purchases of ₩38.1 billion in KODEX Leverage and ₩1.5 billion in TIGER Leverage. Combined, net purchases of the two products totaled approximately ₩39.6 billion. While investors continue to net-buy domestic double-leveraged products, some have expanded their trading universe to include triple-leveraged products listed in the U.S. market.

There were also signs of investors buying Korean companies directly through U.S. markets. SK Hynix American Depositary Receipts (ADRs) recorded buy settlement volume of $506.89 million (approximately ₩700 billion) over the same period, ranking sixth among all overseas equities—trailing only Alphabet, Micron, SanDisk, and Tesla. Net buy settlements also reached $190.55 million (approximately ₩260 billion), placing seventh.

Securities industry observers noted that the U.S. ETF market is rapidly absorbing diverse investment demand. Han Su-jin, a senior analyst at Samsung Securities, said, “The U.S. ETF market has posted net inflows for 51 consecutive months, with active ETFs growing by absorbing diverse investment demand including tactical rebalancing and derivatives strategies.” Cumulative net inflows into the U.S. ETF market reached $1.23 trillion (approximately ₩1,702 trillion) through July of this year.

The range of leveraged product choices is also expanding rapidly. The U.S. market recently saw the listing of ETFs that track two times the daily return of individual stocks such as Micron. This means investors now have a growing array of products that allow them to select their desired direction and leverage ratio across markets, sectors, and individual stocks.

However, higher leverage ratios also mean greater loss risk. Double- and triple-leveraged ETFs target a multiple of daily returns, not a multiple of cumulative returns over a given period. In volatile markets characterized by repeated sharp swings, the compounding effect can leave investors with losses even if the underlying index returns to its original level.

Park Seung-jin, an analyst at Hana Securities, explained, “From the perspective of constructing an ETF portfolio, it remains necessary to select strategies that account for volatility. With semiconductor sector fluctuations persisting even amid expectations of short-term rebounds following corrections, investors should consider utilizing representative index ETFs or flexible management strategies.”

South Korean retail investors are now actively trading a U.S.-listed “triple-leveraged South Korea exchange-traded fund (ETF)” to bet…

[2
67615,12484,22423,7356,171,1485,11765,984,275,2558,67616
post-132733","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-korea","tag-direxion-daily-msci-south-korea-bull-3x-etf","tag-hana-securities","tag-kodex-leverage","tag-korea-securities-depository","tag-korean","tag-micron","tag-msci-korea-index","tag-samsung-securities","tag-sk-hynix","tag-tesla","tag-tiger-leverage
["GET
