On Wednesday, as part of its latest update to its long-term strategy<\/a>, Hyundai announced a plan that enthusiasts can certainly get behind: the Korean automaker wants to build more performance vehicles. A lot more performance vehicles, as it turns out. The goal is to increase sales of high-performance N series vehicles from the current rate of 20,000 per year to 100,000 per year by 2030.<\/p>\n

Hyundai will not achieve this goal by simply cranking out more Ioniq 5 N and Elantra N models; rather, the company\u2019s strategy is much more ambitious. According to a report by Automotive News<\/a>, Hyundai CEO Jose Mu\u00f1oz is committing to increasing the N lineup to seven vehicles. Slides from the presentation posted to social media<\/a> reveal this plan includes includes rear-wheel drive \/ all-wheel drive models, and even crossovers.<\/p>\n

What, exactly, will those new models be? Hyundai has already announced the Ioniq 6 N<\/a>, so we know that one is coming soon. The crossover plans could suggest a return of the Kona N, or perhaps a Tucson N based on the sharp-looking new model<\/a>. And the stated \u201cFR \/ AWD\u201d (front-engined, rear- or all-wheel drive) slot in the presentation shows it\u2019s expected to be a relatively large share of sales, which seems promising. Luckily, 2030 isn\u2019t too far away, so we should start to learn of the future N models relatively soon.<\/p>\n

And while Hyundai did not officially confirm the Genesis Magma GT Concept sports car was coming to production, the slide above from the presentation certainly seems to hint that it will indeed reach the streets.<\/p>\n

Hyundai is also planning to introduce a new \u201chigh-volume\u201d high-performance trim level, which will slot between the current appearance-only N Line trim and the full fat N series vehicles. The idea of this new N performance middle child is to appeal to buyers who want more performance out of their daily driver without committing to something as hardcore and track ready as the Ioniq 5 N<\/a> or Elantra N<\/a>.<\/p>\n

As for this new middle tier, we don\u2019t know what it will be officially called, or what models will get the treatment. But again, 2030 will be here before we know it, so should expect to discover these details in short order.<\/p>\n

Regardless of the minutiae, it\u2019s exciting to hear that Hyundai is going to be investing heavily in performance machines. As enthusiast cars from the likes of Porsche, BMW and even Chevrolet continue to grow more expensive, Hyundai stepping up with more N cars and other performance choices at more attainable price points is a growth strategy we can get behind.<\/p>\n
