With this contract, LG Innotek has entered mass production of robotaxi camera modules for the first time, a move seen as a pivotal step in expanding its smartphone-focused optics business into physical artificial intelligence (AI) sectors such as autonomous driving and robotics.<\/p>\n<p>LG Innotek announced on the 27th through its newsroom that it will supply 5-megapixel automotive camera modules to be mounted on Zoox robotaxis over the next several years. The two companies are reported to have maintained a collaborative relationship since the early stages of Zoox&#8217;s robotaxi development, co-developing camera modules from the outset.<\/p>\n<p>The significance of this supply deal lies in the fact that these are not merely test components but core parts for commercial robotaxis deployed in actual ride-hailing services, delivered over an extended period. Zoox designs and manufactures purpose-built robotaxis from the ground up\u2014vehicles with no driver&#8217;s seat, steering wheel, or pedals\u2014rather than retrofitting existing passenger cars. A distinctive feature is the seating arrangement, with four passengers facing each other.<\/p>\n<p>Zoox is an autonomous driving technology company acquired by Amazon in 2020. Last year, it established the world&#8217;s first dedicated robotaxi production facility in Hayward, California, and launched paid robotaxi services for the general public in Las Vegas. The company is also expanding user-facing services in San Francisco. The Hayward plant has the capacity to produce more than 10,000 robotaxis annually.<\/p>\n<p>The camera modules supplied by LG Innotek are designed with different viewing angles depending on where they are mounted on the vehicle. Multiple cameras provide 360-degree sensing around the vehicle to detect pedestrians, other vehicles, and obstacles while minimizing blind spots. The imagery captured by the cameras is combined with LiDAR, radar, and infrared sensor data to help the robotaxi perceive its surroundings and determine driving routes.<\/p>\n<p>Ultra-precision optical design technology honed in the smartphone camera business has also been applied. Durability has been enhanced to maintain consistent performance amid extreme temperature fluctuations, and waterproofing ensures stable environmental sensing even in adverse weather conditions such as rain or snow.<\/p>\n<p>Industry observers are also paying attention to this order from the perspective of LG Innotek&#8217;s customer and business portfolio diversification. In the first half of this year, revenue from a single customer believed to be Apple reached 8.84 trillion won (approximately $6.4 billion), accounting for 77.9% of total revenue. Expanding the technology and mass-production capabilities secured in the smartphone-centric optics business into autonomous driving initiatives by North American automakers and Big Tech has been identified as a key mid- to long-term priority.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, vehicle camera revenue increased for two consecutive quarters in Q1 and Q2 this year, driven by expanded supply for new models from a major North American customer. The mobility solutions business also posted Q2 revenue of 510.9 billion won (approximately $370.9 million), up 10% year-over-year. Last year, new orders for mobility solutions reached 4.8 trillion won (approximately $3.5 billion), with a record year-end order backlog of 19.2 trillion won (approximately $13.9 billion).<\/p>\n<p>LG Innotek is cultivating autonomous driving sensing solutions\u2014combining vehicle cameras with LiDAR and radar\u2014as a future growth engine. At CES 2026, the company unveiled a heating camera that melts snow and ice, a cleaning camera that removes moisture and debris from lenses within one second, and LiDAR capable of detecting objects up to 200 meters away. Leveraging these technologies, the company aims to grow vehicle sensing solution revenue to 2 trillion won (approximately $1.5 billion) or more by 2030.<\/p>\n<p>The company is also expanding collaboration in the software sector. This year, it entered into a strategic partnership with Applied Intuition, a U.S.-based autonomous driving software company, and signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Kakao Mobility to cooperate on autonomous driving solution development.<\/p>\n<p>Market growth prospects are also positive. Counterpoint Research projects that the global robotaxi fleet will reach 3.6 million vehicles by 2035, with the robotaxi service market reaching $168 billion (approximately 231.4 trillion won).
