(WLFI) – It’s full steam ahead for SK Hynix as Thursday marked the ceremonial ground breaking for the semiconductor facility.

Partnering with the city of West Lafayette, the state of Indiana, and Purdue University, SK Hynix is pushing for growth in the world of technology.

Located in the Purdue Research Park, the $4 billion investment will create memory chips used for the growing demand for artificial intelligence.

SK Hynix created the first high bandwidth memory, or HBM, back in 2013. Now, they’re looking to keep evolving the industry of memory chips.

“We want to create jobs and develop talent and we want to grow together with Indiana and the United States,” said SK Group Chairman, Jeong Joon Yu.

Students studying at the Birck Nanotechnology Center on Purdue’s campus are getting a glimpse of what SK Hynix workers will be doing. In what are called ‘clean rooms’, research is being done to create more HBM’s.

800 undergraduate and graduate students are currently pursuing work in a related field.

“We at Purdue have grown to the nation’s leading producer of so called STEM talent, engineers, computer scientists, life scientists, and all the related disciplines. We take that responsibility very, very seriously,” said Purdue Interim President Mitch Daniels.

For the city of West Lafayette, it means jobs, growth, and becoming home to the first memory production site of this kind in the United States.

“We knew what SK Hynix saw here, Purdue University, extraordinary talent, and a community with a long history of research, discovery, and innovation. I am excited for the careers that will begin here, the research that will advance here and for the discoveries that we cannot yet imagine,” said West Lafayette Mayor Erin Easter.

Announced in April of 2024, the project is anticipated to be completed by 2028 with volume production to begin in late 2029.

SK Hynix Construction Site Manager Hyujoong Kim said, “Completion is about 7%, and in terms of the structural work, we have completed about 15%. And it is on schedule to be completed on time.”

In what was once a cornfield, the project spans 133 acres or a hundred football fields. The entire project is creating 7,000 jobs: 1,000 direct and 6,000 indirect.

Local leaders share that the SK Hynix facility marks the beginning of an innovative partnership as AI and technology only continue to grow.

Copyright 2026 WLFI.
