It approved a possible <a data-ylk=\"slk:$106 million sale;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;link&quot;,&quot;yLinkElementType&quot;:&quot;article_link&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.state.gov\/releases\/bureau-of-political-military-affairs\/2026\/06\/republic-of-korea-joint-direct-attack-munitions\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">$106 million sale<\/a> of Joint Direct Attack Munition guidance kits and related equipment in June.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The sales are &#8220;encouraging the ROK to boost its capability to fight a war,&#8221; the spokesperson said, using the official acronym for South Korea.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;Now that the military integration of the U.S. and its allies is being accelerated in the Asia-Pacific region, we cannot overlook the adverse effect of the U.S. sale of its weapons to the ROK on the regional security environment,&#8221; the spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The statement also criticized a State Department funding initiative announced last week that would provide up to <a data-ylk=\"slk:$2.96 million for projects;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;link&quot;,&quot;yLinkElementType&quot;:&quot;article_link&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.state.gov\/releases\/bureau-of-democracy-human-rights-and-labor\/2026\/08\/notice-of-funding-opportunity-nofo-documenting-human-rights-abuses-and-countering-dprk-propaganda\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">$2.96 million for projects<\/a> documenting human rights abuses in North Korea and countering Pyongyang&#8217;s propaganda and influence operations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The spokesperson called the initiative a &#8220;human rights smear campaign&#8221; aimed at creating instability in North Korea&#8217;s political system.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The DPRK &#8220;will make a serious, immediate and powerful response to the hostile acts in different spheres,&#8221; the spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The statement comes as U.S. President Donald Trump pushes to restart direct diplomacy with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Trump last week <a data-ylk=\"slk:abruptly ordered;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;link&quot;,&quot;yLinkElementType&quot;:&quot;article_link&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.upi.com\/Top_News\/World-News\/2026\/08\/19\/korea-US-South-Korea-Trump-military-exercise-cut-short\/5091787118648\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">abruptly ordered<\/a> the United States and South Korea to curtail their annual Ulchi Freedom Shield military exercise, citing its cost and saying the drills sent an &#8220;inappropriate and hostile&#8221; signal to Pyongyang.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">North Korea has so far shown little inclination to engage, however.
