Compounds linked to Chinese syndicates were exposed for <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/week-asia\/people\/article\/3318212\/pogos-pakistan-scheme-traffic-filipinos-shows-evolution-scam-operations?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">human trafficking<\/a>, torture and fraud on a scale so shocking it triggered a congressional inquiry, presidential intervention and, eventually, a <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/week-asia\/politics\/article\/3272078\/after-philippines-pogos-ban-what-next-40000-displaced-filipino-workers-industry?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">permanent ban<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">But while investigators trained their attention on those operations, an analogous Korean criminal economy was expanding largely unnoticed.
