Hyundai Motor’s steady seller, the Avante, has long been known as Korea’s “first car.” It carries a price young workers can manage while still offering strong performance. That value proposition helped the model sell 3.5 million units in South Korea and more than 16 million worldwide since its 1990 debut.

The Avante has now reached its eighth generation, with the fully loaded gasoline version priced above 37 million won. A fully loaded hybrid runs as high as 42 million won. That is at least 3.36 million won more than the seventh-generation model.

The first impression of The All-New Avante, seen on the 24th, was one of refinement. Drawing on Hyundai Motor’s (005380) “Art of Steel” design language, the exterior blends precise lines with firm surfaces. Compared with its predecessor, the car looks noticeably sleeker and more angular.

<img loading="lazy" alt="The interior of Hyundai Motor's flagship compact sedan, the All-New Avante. Photo courtesy of Hyundai Motor

It has also grown. The All-New Avante measures 4,765 millimeters long, 1,855 millimeters wide and 1,425 millimeters tall, with a wheelbase of 2,750 millimeters. That is 55 millimeters longer, 5 millimeters taller and 30 millimeters wider than the previous model, with the wheelbase also extended by 30 millimeters. The cabin feels more spacious than before, and the cramped sensation is gone. The gap between the driver and front passenger seats is generous, and the interior display and instrument cluster have been stripped of clutter to open up the space.

Driving performance proved more than adequate across city streets and expressways. The test route ran about 85 kilometers round trip from Hyundai Motorstudio Goyang in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province, to Yeongjong Island in Incheon, using a gasoline 2.0 Inspiration trim. Neither high-speed nor steady-speed driving posed any real problem. Hard acceleration on the highway was particularly satisfying, with the car pulling forward without any sense of being held back.

The smaller steering wheel is another draw. The new “Double D-cut” wheel, flattened at the top and bottom, is about 20 millimeters smaller in diameter than the previous version. The reduced size translates into immediate steering response.

Driver assistance has also advanced a step. Navigation-based Smart Cruise Control 2, applied for the first time by Hyundai Motor, helps the car slow down on its own not only on highways but also on ordinary roads, at speed bumps and other deceleration points. The feature eases the burden on drivers who otherwise alternate between the accelerator and the brake in city traffic.

The Avante is the second Hyundai Motor model after the Grandeur to carry Pleos Connect, the company’s next-generation infotainment system. Calling out to “Gleo” to ask about the weather or nearby restaurants brings a response from a generative AI agent that provides information through natural conversation. For now, though, Gleo AI could not supply information on real-time markets such as stock prices.

Combined fuel economy is rated at 13.3 kilometers per liter. Over about 30 kilometers driven mainly on highways with intermittent use of smart cruise control, fuel economy came in around 17 kilometers per liter. The All-New Avante is priced from 23.98 million to 37.17 million won for the gasoline 2.0 model and from 30.42 million to 42.64 million won for the 1.6 hybrid, before tax incentives.

Hyundai Motor’s flagship compact sedan, the All-New Avante.
