Competition in delivery platforms seems to be shifting from “delivery fees” to “recommendation of restaurants.” As Baedal Minjok (Bae Min) and Coupang Eats have released a series of services to discover and recommend local restaurants, competition to preempt excellent stores is intensifying while reducing the burden of consumers’ choice in overflowing restaurant information.<\/p>\n

According to the industry on the 30th, Baemin operator Woowa Brothers expanded its data-based gourmet guide “Mintstar” nationwide on the 25th. Following the pilot operation in Seongdong-gu and Nowon-gu, Seoul, about 4,000 restaurants were selected nationwide, including 2,500 in Seoul.<\/p>\n

Mintstar is a service that selects and introduces stores that are consistently selected by customers in the neighborhood based on the use data of restaurants in Baemin. It comprehensively examines stores with distinct regional characteristics and places where there are many actual visitors or where specific reviews of the food have been accumulated.<\/p>\n

Selection stores can be found through separate badges and recommendation areas on the app. It did not just show the list of restaurants, but also provided the background of the store’s selection, recommended menus, and user reviews so that consumers could discover new restaurants. Baemin plans to expand its scope by discovering additional stores for each region in the future.<\/p>\n

Coupang Eats also expanded its “line restaurant,” which started in Daegu in March, to major regions across the country, including Seoul and the metropolitan area, from the end of April. A separate menu is created at the top of the food category and shows popular restaurants by region. Competitive restaurants by region will be selected by combining the store’s business status and external agency certification.<\/p>\n

On top of that, Coupang Eats is introducing restaurant brands and solo menus through its “Chef It’s Collection” to secure menus that can only be experienced on the platform.<\/p>\n

Securing user stay time through ‘direct recommendation’<\/p>\n

In the end, both platforms are helping to secure places that can be recommended to “order here” rather than increasing the number of “delivery places.”<\/p>\n

This also coincides with the market situation where it becomes difficult to choose a restaurant itself as the number of delivery app users increases. For consumers, the burden of ordering has been reduced due to lower delivery costs, but the hassle of having to compare numerous restaurants and menus one by one remains. As a platform, the more directly involved in this selection process, the more likely it is for users to stay in the app and revisit.<\/p>\n

The actual delivery market is also growing. According to WiseApp and Retail, the payment estimates of the four delivery platforms rose 18% year-on-year to 3.2787 trillion won last month, the highest ever. The number of monthly active users of Baedal Minjok is maintained at 23.02 million, and Coupang Eats is also closing the gap by increasing to 13.13 million.<\/p>\n

The industry also sees the possibility that the curation of restaurants will expand beyond simple recommendation services to new business areas of the platform in the future. This is because the combination of platforms and restaurants can be strengthened through advertisements, discount promotions, and exclusive menus for recommended stores.<\/p>\n
