HYUNDAI Motor and Shell have extended their global partnership through 2031, taking a relationship that began with conventional lubricants more than two decades ago into electric vehicles (EVs), motorsports, and next-generation mobility.<\/p>\n
The two companies renewed their Global Business Cooperation Agreement for another five years, continuing a partnership that dates back to 2005.<\/p>\n
While engine oils and after-sales programs remain part of the arrangement, the new agreement puts greater emphasis on research and development for future vehicles. Hyundai and Shell plan to work together on improved lubricants for internal combustion engines as well as specialized fluids and coolants for EVs.<\/p>\n
That shift reflects how the role of lubricant companies is changing as automakers move toward electrification.<\/p>\n
Battery EVs may not need engine oil, but they still require fluids for areas such as thermal management, transmissions, and other components. Keeping batteries, electric motors, and power electronics within their ideal operating temperatures is becoming increasingly important as EV performance and charging speeds continue to rise.<\/p>\n

The partnership will continue on the motorsport side as well.<\/p>\n Shell is working with Genesis Magma Racing, Hyundai Motor Group\u2019s luxury-brand racing program, during its debut season in the FIA World Endurance Championship in 2026. The company supplies specialized lubricants and coolants for the Genesis GMR-001 Hypercar.<\/p>\n Shell is also working with Hyundai\u2019s N performance division to develop lubricants and fluids for both high-performance combustion engines and electric vehicles.<\/p>\n Motorsport has traditionally served as a demanding test environment for oils, fuels, and other automotive fluids because race cars operate under temperatures and loads well beyond those normally experienced on public roads.
