It can be really annoying, but if you have some extra time and it’s a birthday or holiday gift, you can usually return things fairly quickly. Now, what if it was something completely out of left field and you were left scratching your head on what to do next?

A mom from Australia was extremely frustrated when she ordered a Mary Poppins costume for her 10-year-old to wear to school for a special dress-up occasion only to open up the box and find a costume that resembled none other than Kim Jong Un, the ever-polarizing leader of North Korea. This was a massive mistake that any caring parent would feel some type of way about!

Well, this certainly isn’t a Mary Poppins costume!

According to LADBible.com, a mom from Australia has spoken out against a certain online retailer after there was a costume delivery hiccup that left both her and her daughter severely disappointed.

In order to properly celebrate Australia’s schools ‘Book Week,’ where children are encouraged to dress up as their favorite literary characters, a Melbourne mom’s 10-year-old daughter had hopes of dressing up as Mary Poppins, the iconic character who was written by Australian-British author, Pamela Lyndon Travers.

On August 23, the mom submitted an order for a ‘Musical Nanny Deluxe’ costume that was around $60 from the CostumeBox retailer, per LADBible.com. It was supposed to have everything included from her signature coat, skirt, hat, and bow tie. How adorable.

Only, when the family received the package in the mail a few days later, it was an alarming mask that resembled Kim Jung Un, the leader of North Korea. Talk about a super disturbing mixup!

The frustrated mom sent an email to the retailer after their horrifying mistake. RainStar/iStock

In a post on Instagram, the heated email sent from the frustrated mom was shared. She wrote, “Hi, You sent me the wrong costume! My daughter needed the Mary Poppins costume for book week and you sent me a Kim Jung Un costume! What is the meaning of this?!”

She went on to say, “Her book week parade is this Friday and you sent me a Communist leader’s costume?! How is a 10 year old wearing that for her school book week?!!!! This is unacceptable. She has her parade in 2 days! And she’s absolutely gutted.” As a parent, something like this must be heartbreaking, especially considering your child’s anticipation for dressing up for the parade.

The mom also included a photo of her invoice number, which showed she had indeed placed an order for the ‘Musical Nanny’ costume from the online retailer.

Fortunately, the retailer tried to make things right for the 10-year-old.

At the end of her caption on Instagram, the mom asked her followers “does anyone know where she can get a Mary one in time 🤦‍♀️.” Luckily, the company that caused this fiasco in the first place jumped in to help set things right for the little girl who just wanted to dress up as her favorite character.

Someone on the CostumeBox team left a comment on the post. It said it part, “So…you can choose your own adventure on this one folks.. either: “A small but determined communist uprising has occurred within our warehouse ranks. Rest assured, the rebellion has been quashed and our righteous capitalist order has been restored.” While some might not appreciate their attempt at some lighthearted humor, they did eventually share what may have actually happened.

They wrote, “A simple but regrettable human error has occurred in our warehouse where two address labels have been accidentally switched.” They also shared that the customer should receive their Mary Poppins costume “in time for the Book Week parade on Friday.” Thank goodness!

Even though the mom was definitely not laughing at this, there were a few people in the comments who found the mixup pretty funny. One person wrote, “I mean, let’s spare a thought for the person who ordered the “Supreme Leader” mask and is now faced with wearing a Mary Poppins costume instead 😂.” Another commented, “Gonna use ‘what is the meaning of this’ moving forward… 😂.”

READ NEXT: 11-Year-Old Batter’s Sneaky Trick Sparks a Huge Sportsmanship Question

     Published August 31, 2026

Bettmann Contributor via Getty Images Have you ever ordered something online for one of your kids only to…

[6
70343,141,31,34,1015,34498,70344
post-138253","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-north-korea","tag-costume","tag-kim-jong-un","tag-korea","tag-north-korea","tag-trending","tag-viral","tag-viral-moments
["GET
