The index combines data on consumer engagement, media exposure, online interaction and community activity.

For anyone outside Korea’s dedicated K-pop fandom, however, both Woni and Rescene may still be unfamiliar names.

Rescene debuted in March 2024 and, until this year, had struggled to break into the domestic mainstream, let alone build significant recognition overseas.

Then came the YouTube breakthrough.

The meme effect

Woni debuted alongside Rescene members Minami, Liv, Zena and May on March 26, 2024, with the single album “Re:Scene,” led by “UhUh.” The group continued releasing music, but its songs initially struggled to make Korea’s major streaming charts.

In February, Woni launched her YouTube channel, HelloIamWoniNiceToMeetYou.

Through it, she offered something outside the polished performances and carefully managed appearances typically associated with K-pop idols. The channel’s videos instead revolved around everyday conversations, inside jokes and the chemistry among the members.

            Rescene (The Muze Entertainment)

That seemingly throwaway decision changed the group’s trajectory.

In a video uploaded in March, Rescene’s Japanese member Minami appeared in a “gyaru” look, inspired by the Japanese subculture. Woni, who is from Geoje, South Gyeongsang Province, joked that locals would scold Minami if she went to her hometown dressed that way.

Minami responded without missing a beat: “Geoje, yaho!”

“Yaho” is a casual Japanese greeting similar to “hi” or “hey,” making the phrase roughly “Hi, Geoje!” The carefree response to Woni’s warning proved unexpectedly catchy.

The phrase quickly became an internet meme, with short-form clips spreading across social media. Viewers found their way to Woni’s channel and, increasingly, to Rescene itself. Soon, that attention began spilling over into the group’s music.

The biggest beneficiary was “Love Attack,” the lead track from Rescene’s first EP, “Scenedrome,” released in August 2024.

The song had debuted at a humble No. 904 on the daily chart of one of South Korea’s largest music streaming services, Melon, in September 2024. Nearly two years later, it staged an unlikely resurgence: Reentering the chart in May, the song climbed to the top 10 in June and by July, had reached No. 1.

By the end of June, streams of “Love Attack” had surged by as much as 2,019 percent compared with when Woni’s channel launched in February, according to Melon Data Lab. Searches for Rescene on Melon jumped 6,550 percent following the emergence of the “Geoje yaho” meme.

Melon Data Lab went on to select Rescene as its artist of the first half of 2026, and at one point in July, four of the group’s songs appeared on the Top 100 simultaneously.

Woni’s individual profile rose alongside the group. She took the No. 1 spot in the individual idol brand reputation ranking in July and retained it in August.

Staying ahead of some of K-pop’s biggest names for two consecutive months marks an unusual rise for the leader of a group that was little known to the wider public only months ago.

Woni of Rescene (The Muze Entertainment)

Why Woni clicks

“Geoje yaho” may have provided the spark, but a meme alone does not explain why viewers stayed.

Much of Woni’s appeal lies in how little her YouTube persona resembles the conventional image of a K-pop idol. Rather than projecting perfection, she comes across as someone casually spending time with friends.

Woni grew up in Geoje, a coastal city about 330 kilometers south of Seoul and one of Korea’s major shipbuilding hubs. Far removed from the capital-centered world of K-pop, her hometown dialect and down-to-earth manner has become part of her appeal.

The channel has also found ways to bring out the personalities of the other Rescene members. Minami’s gyaru persona and Zena’s dialect-driven content have become recurring themes, helping videos reach audiences beyond the group’s existing fandom through social media algorithms.

When “Geoje yaho” took off, Woni and Minami even traveled to Geoje together. Instead of turning the trip into a glossy tourism video, the two meandered through ordinary streets and tried catching seafood with their bare hands.

That mix of contemporary editing and styling with decidedly everyday life has become part of the channel’s charm — and helped turn Woni into one of K-pop’s breakout personalities of the year.

jaaykim@heraldcorp.com

Rescene leader ranked as most talked-about idol for second straight month after YouTube rise, ahead of BTS’ Jimin…

[2
195,22968,29499
post-138671","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-korea","tag-k-pop","tag-rescene","tag-woni
["GET
