We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.<\/p>\n<p>Your support makes all the difference.Read more<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/belarus\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Belarus<\/a>&#8216; President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/alexander-lukashenko\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alexander Lukashenko<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/north-korea\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">North Korean<\/a> leader <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/kim-jong-un\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kim Jong Un<\/a> held talks in North Korea\u2019s capital on Thursday and signed a friendship and cooperation treaty.<\/p>\n<p>Lukashenko, who was in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/pyongyang\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pyongyang<\/a> on a two-day official visit, hailed the document as \u201cfundamental,\u201d and said that relations between the two countries are \u201centering a new stage,\u201d according to his press service.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, we didn\u2019t have close cooperation, largely due to our own fault. But I am sincerely pleased to note that cooperation has now significantly intensified,\u201d Lukashenko said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn today\u2019s reality of a global transformation, when the global powers openly ignore and violate international law, independent countries need to cooperate more closely, consolidate efforts aimed at protecting their sovereignty and improving the well-being of our citizens,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Lukashenko\u2019s press service quoted Kim expressing \u201csolidarity and full support\u201d for Belarus and speaking out \u201cagainst unlawful pressure on Belarus from the West.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Belarus is a close ally of Russia.
