Fast-charging an EV is (usually) convenient and (relatively) affordable these days, but the decentralized nature of the various charging networks can lead to problems. And sometimes, those problems can get expensive. For one Chevrolet Bolt<\/a> renter in Michigan recently, the problem apparently ended up being very expensive.<\/p>\n

Stanley Kpenkann told Detroit local news station KXYZ<\/a> that he was coming back from an airport run in his rental Chevy when he realized he was low on battery. Like many other EV owners, he loaded up the EVgo app and used it to find a charging station. But after just 44 minutes of charging at a local Hyundai dealership, he says that he was billed a whopping $418.<\/p>\n

WXYZ reports that the amount was the result of intentionally high prices set by the dealership, citing general managers at the location who said the prices are set in that manner to deter use by anyone but customers or dealership employees. The cost, per a screen on the machine, is a ridiculous $5 per kWh and $5 per 5 minutes on the machine. Typical fast charging pricing is closer to 50 cents per kWh.<\/p>\n

During a conversation with WXYZ, Kpenkann put it in terms that would make it more relatable to the average ICE driver: \u201cYou don’t go into into a gas station where the average price of gas is four dollars, expecting they’re gonna charge you twenty-five dollars per gallon.\u201d He also says that he never saw the prices before starting his charging session.<\/p>\n

EVgo eventually refunded $405 to Kpenkann, bringing the fee down to a $13.57 that the company claims represents what he would have otherwise paid for the charging session under his subscription plan. The company says that pricing is set by a charger\u2019s owner, however, leaving the door open for publicly-available stations with massive fees for one reason or another like the one Kpenkann encountered.<\/p>\n
