SK Biopharmaceuticals is spending about 17 billion won ($12.3 million) a year to build large-scale in-house artificial intelligence infrastructure, using it to drive an AI shift in translational research, the field that links preclinical findings to human clinical outcomes.<\/p>\n
SK Biopharmaceuticals (326030.KS) said on the 2nd that it has secured large-scale in-house AI computing infrastructure by adopting 128 units of Nvidia’s B200, an AI accelerator built on the Blackwell architecture. The contract is structured as an annual subscription worth about 17 billion won. The company plans to use the infrastructure to strengthen AI research capabilities specialized for biotech and healthcare, and to pursue innovation across the entire drug development process while creating new business opportunities.<\/p>\n
SK Biopharmaceuticals plans to concentrate the new infrastructure on TR-AX, its term for the AI transformation of translational research. Translational research is the process of connecting findings from preclinical work such as animal testing to clinical results in humans. The company will apply its own specialized foundation model to actual research projects, upgrading capabilities across translational research as well as diseases, targets and compounds.<\/p>\n
The company will also build a dedicated large language model (LLM) that can be used across various internal business areas. By continuously operating sufficient resources for model training and inference, it aims to shorten the research cycle that runs from experiment to analysis to retraining, and to raise productivity throughout drug development, from identifying candidate compounds to making research decisions.<\/p>\n
Running sensitive research data in a controlled environment will also strengthen data security and governance. The company plans to use the AI infrastructure for joint research with outside companies, research institutes and universities, and will consider expanding into new business models such as AI-based research services.<\/p>\n
“Based on world-class B200 infrastructure, we will further strengthen TR-AX, a core capability in early-stage drug research and development,” SK Biopharmaceuticals CEO Lee Dong-hoon said. “We will maximize the use of AI across the entire drug development process to dramatically improve the speed and efficiency of R&D.”<\/p>\n
The deployment was carried out through Haein, the country’s first B200-based data center cluster, built by SK Telecom (017670.KS). In line with the group’s AX growth strategy, SK Biopharmaceuticals will use GPUaaS, a GPU subscription service delivered through the cloud, to secure the computing resources it needs in advance and push forward major AI projects.<\/p>\n
The 128 B200 units deliver 576 petaflops per second on an FP8 basis, or about 0.58 exaflops.
