The orders consist of two liquefied natural gas carriers and three very large crude carriers.

The LNG carriers are destined for an undisclosed client in Africa, with delivery scheduled for May 2029. The three VLCCs will be supplied to a shipping company in Oceania by June 2029.

The company’s orders this year now total 11 vessels, including six VLCCs, four LNG carriers, and one wind turbine installation vessel, with an aggregate value of approximately 3.46 trillion won.

Industry dynamics appear to be influencing investment. A resurgence in VLCC freight rates, following the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, is noted as a factor prompting shipowners to expedite decisions. Rising shipping costs due to Middle East tensions are pushing more shippers to place advance orders for VLCCs.

Meanwhile, demand for LNG carriers is projected to increase in the medium to long term. This expectation is driven by planned LNG terminal developments set to commence after 2028, particularly in the United States and other regions.

In response to these trends, Hanwha Ocean intends to continue a strategy of selective ordering, focusing on large, high-value vessels while maintaining adaptability to market changes.

Separately, the company secured a module fabrication contract for the Leviathan Expansion Project from Chevron Mediterranean earlier this month. Hanwha Ocean has been involved in that offshore Israel project since the third quarter of 2024, providing constructability insights.

 1.
