Samsung Electronics (005930) Chairman Jay Y. Lee and SK Group (034730) Chairman Chey Tae-won will travel to New York later this month to meet Nvidia Chief Executive Jensen Huang and other Big Tech executives. The two chiefs are expected to congratulate Huang, who is receiving an international award for contributing to Korea-U.S. friendship, and to discuss ways to deepen cooperation in artificial intelligence memory chips.<\/p>\n
Lee and Chey will attend the annual dinner of the Korea Society, a nonprofit group promoting Korea-U.S. friendship, in New York on the 28th, where they will meet Big Tech executives including Huang, according to business sources on the 4th. The event will honor Huang as this year’s recipient of the Van Fleet Award, which the Korea Society gives to figures who have contributed to strengthening bilateral cooperation.<\/p>\n
Samsung Electronics and SK decided that both chairmen would attend the ceremony in person to offer their congratulations, given that Huang is a key partner in the Korea-U.S. cooperation cited in the award, sources said. Lee’s decision to attend is part of a broader sales-driven approach aimed at expanding contacts with global technology companies, following his participation in the Sun Valley Conference in the U.S. in July, an event often called the “billionaires’ summer camp.” The award carries added meaning for Lee because his father, the late Chairman Lee Kun-hee, received it in 2006. Chey also indicated he would attend, mindful of the significance that both he and his father, the late SK Chairman Chey Jong-hyun, have received the Van Fleet Award.<\/p>\n
With the two chairmen meeting Huang again, the talks are expected to go beyond congratulations to cover expanded business cooperation in AI memory, physical AI and robotics, areas the companies have been pursuing together. During a visit to South Korea in June, Huang said he wanted to expand partnerships with Samsung Electronics and SK in those fields.<\/p>\n
Discussions are likely to focus in particular on supplying more high-bandwidth memory 4 (HBM4) for Vera Rubin, Nvidia’s next-generation AI accelerator set to launch soon, as well as future memory products. Samsung Electronics and SK hynix (000660) are strengthening ties with Big Tech customers to take the lead in HBM4 supply while also accelerating DRAM production expansion.<\/p>\n
Samsung Electronics held a 33% share of the HBM market in the second quarter of this year, when HBM4 shipments began, sharply narrowing the gap with market leader SK hynix at 50% from the previous quarter, according to Counterpoint Research.<\/p>\n
The Van Fleet Award was established in 1995 to honor General James Van Fleet, who commanded the U.S. Eighth Army during the Korean War and founded the Korea Society in 1957. Past recipients include former U.S. Presidents Jimmy Carter and George H.W.
