Traders<\/a> in the North Korean border<\/a> city of Hyesan<\/a> are scouring Chinese<\/a> markets<\/a> for summer<\/a> clothing<\/a> and footwear samples ahead of the import season, with rising temperatures pushing preparations roughly two months earlier than in previous years.<\/p>\n

A Daily NK source in Ryanggang province said on Tuesday that traders have recently brought in samples of women\u2019s dresses, light blouses, summer sneakers, and dress shoes through customs checkpoints, gauging consumer interest at shops and jangmadang markets throughout the city. Jangmadang are the informal markets that have become a central feature of everyday economic life in North Korea since the famine of the 1990s.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re bringing in goods from China<\/a> tailored to what wealthy<\/a> people, young<\/a> people, and ordinary workers<\/a> want,\u201d the source said.<\/p>\n

The sample-testing push reflects a market<\/a> that has grown more selective. Domestically produced clothing and footwear in North Korea have improved in quality and design in recent years, making cheap Chinese imports<\/a> less automatically competitive. Traders now say Chinese goods must offer a clear advantage in price<\/a>, quality, or style to move off shelves.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the past, I could pick items I thought looked good and send them as samples, and four out of five would get approved,\u201d one Chinese trader said. \u201cNow it\u2019s hard to get even one approved. I don\u2019t know how standards keep rising when they can\u2019t even watch foreign television properly.\u201d<\/p>\n
