Photo courtesy of Samsung Electronics<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-[var(--color-text)] leading-relaxed\">Samsung Electronics (005930.KS) is strengthening its environmental, social and governance (ESG) practices by recycling 30 types of waste generated in semiconductor production.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-[var(--color-text)] leading-relaxed\">The company said on the 4th that it had obtained a total of 38 circular resource certifications as of last month \u2014 30 in its semiconductor (DS) division and eight in its finished products (DX) division. Under the certification program, industrial waste that meets government standards for human health risk and economic viability is exempted from waste regulations and can be reused as raw material.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-[var(--color-text)] leading-relaxed\">Samsung has pursued the certifications for various types of waste since 2019 as part of its ESG efforts, with a particular focus on recycling waste from chip production.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-[var(--color-text)] leading-relaxed\">The DS division collects plastic wafer trays, the containers used to transport wafers, and reprocesses them into recycled plastic. Working with the DX division&#8217;s circular economy research center, the company uses the resulting material in components such as the side and volume keys of the Galaxy S25 smartphone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-[var(--color-text)] leading-relaxed\">Faulty wafers that cannot be used in chip products are finely crushed and put through a silicon extraction process, then recycled into aluminum alloy raw material for the aviation and construction industries. Diamond discs, precious-metal tools used in wafer polishing, are also processed into raw material for printed circuit boards (PCBs).<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-[var(--color-text)] leading-relaxed\">The DX division collects styrofoam packaging left over after refrigerators, washing machines and other appliances are installed, then sorts and processes it into a new mixed-plastic material of the same quality as conventional material. That material has been applied to interior components of the Bespoke AI Windfree Combo Gallery air conditioner and the Infinite AI air purifier. The Bespoke AI Combo washer-dryer uses material made from waste glass generated in manufacturing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-[var(--color-text)] leading-relaxed\">The efforts cut 6,859 tons of waste last year, the company said.
