Hanwha Ocean

South Korea’s major shipbuilding stocks have posted double-digit declines this year even as the KOSPI surged more than 50%, leaving the sector sidelined from the broader market rally. Prices have shown signs of bottoming out since late July, however, and expectations of a rebound are growing as solid order backlogs give the companies clear earnings visibility.

Hanwha Ocean (042660) closed at 86,800 won on the 4th, up 0.35% from the previous session, according to the Korea Exchange. HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (009540) rose 1.31% to 348,500 won and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (329180) gained 0.34% to 436,500 won. Samsung Heavy Industries (010140) bucked the trend, falling 1.15% to 21,400 won.

Viewed over the full year, the sector’s underperformance is stark. From January 2, the first trading day of the year, through the 4th, the KOSPI climbed 58.6% while Hanwha Ocean fell 24.3%. HD Hyundai Heavy Industries dropped 13.3%, HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering 11.4% and Samsung Heavy Industries 11.3%.

The declines look even sharper measured from their highs. HD Hyundai Heavy Industries has fallen about 43% from the peak it set in May. Hanwha Ocean climbed as high as 149,900 won early in the year before sliding to 74,600 won by late July, effectively cutting its value in half. Samsung Heavy Industries and HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering also went through steep corrections after peaking in April and May.

The mood has shifted in recent weeks. From July 31 through the 4th, the KOSPI rose 19.55%, while Hanwha Ocean gained 9.46% and Samsung Heavy Industries 4.14%. Samsung Heavy Industries jumped 8.58% in the previous session, and Hanwha Ocean rose 5.49%, HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering 4.40% and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries 3.08%.

Brokerages are focusing on the industry’s order backlogs and earnings visibility. Shipbuilders have already secured three to four years of work, and vessels ordered at high prices in the past are now feeding through to revenue in earnest. Tensions in the Middle East, which could push freight rates higher, are another factor lifting investor sentiment.

“Shipbuilding stocks are rebounding as expectations of higher freight rates from Middle East tensions and earnings visibility based on existing order backlogs come to the fore,” said Lee Jae-won, an analyst at Yuanta Securities Korea. “Even as the index swings sharply, funds are flowing into industrials where earnings are confirmed.”

Very large LPG carrier built by Hanwha Ocean.
