So how exactly do home appliances filter out external intruders and protect family privacy? The answer lies in &#8220;physical fingerprints&#8221; etched into semiconductors and cryptographic technologies built on mathematical principles.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Connectivity&#8221; is also the central theme of IFA 2026, the world&#8217;s largest consumer electronics and IT trade show, which opened on the 4th in Berlin, Germany. As Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, and Chinese and European appliance makers compete in the hyper-connected ecosystem with AI homes and robots, the importance of security grows alongside the expanding scope of connectivity.<\/p>\n<p>Door Locks&#8217; &#8216;Decoy Password&#8217; Neutralizes Peeping and Fingerprint Traces<\/p>\n<p>The two most common anxieties about electronic door locks are: someone behind you could steal your password, and fingerprint residue on frequently pressed buttons could expose the number combination.<\/p>\n<p>The technology that solves this is the &#8220;decoy password.&#8221; If your real password is &#8220;1234,&#8221; you can press any number of meaningless fake digits before entering the real password followed by the asterisk key, and the door will still open. Conversely, you can enter the real password first and then continue pressing fake digits afterward.<\/p>\n<p>This works because the microcontroller (MCU) inside the door lock only checks whether &#8220;the correct password combination is properly included somewhere in the sequence&#8221; among the continuous digit signals. Anyone watching from behind cannot tell which digits are real, and since handprints are evenly distributed across the entire keypad, the phenomenon of specific buttons wearing down is also prevented.<\/p>\n<p>PUF, the Semiconductor&#8217;s &#8216;Fingerprint&#8217;: Unclonable Hardware Security<\/p>\n<p>When you turn on the air conditioner or control a robot vacuum through a smartphone app, the reason hackers cannot send fake signals mid-transmission to hijack the device is that the appliance instantly verifies whether the command originated from a real family member or a fake hacker.<\/p>\n<p>To achieve this, the latest appliances are equipped with a &#8220;hardware security chip&#8221; on their mainboards. Just as every person has unique fingerprints, semiconductors also develop unique physical scars\u2014&#8221;nano fingerprints&#8221;\u2014on each chip due to microscopic dust or process variations during manufacturing. Scientists call this PUF (Physical Unclonable Function).<\/p>\n<p>Simply put, each appliance has an &#8220;unforgeable national ID card&#8221; etched deep within its chip. When an external control signal arrives, the security chip compares it against an encrypted secret seal. Commands are executed only when the genuine seal from a registered family member&#8217;s smartphone is present, while fake signals from hackers are immediately blocked. Even if the software is compromised, the hardware chip itself refuses entry.<\/p>\n<p>Camera Footage Travels Through an &#8216;Encrypted Tunnel&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Home cameras in the living room or cameras mounted on robot vacuums capture the home&#8217;s layout and family members in real time. If hackers intercept this footage during transmission, there is a risk of complete privacy exposure.<\/p>\n<p>To prevent this, engineers do not transmit camera footage in raw form. They build an invisible secret tunnel called &#8220;end-to-end encryption (E2EE)&#8221; across the entire path from camera to smartphone.<\/p>\n<p>Footage entering the camera lens is immediately broken down into trillions of random alphanumeric ciphertext characters. Even if hackers steal the data mid-transmission, their screens are filled with meaningless encrypted characters, making the original footage unrecognizable. This ciphertext can only be restored to the original image on the smartphone screen of a family member holding the secret key.<\/p>\n<p>Security in the Hyper-Connected Era: User Action Is the Final Key<\/p>\n<p>The hottest topic in the global IT industry right now is &#8220;Matter,&#8221; a new smart home standard. A hyper-connected era has arrived where Samsung refrigerators, Apple speakers, and LG washing machines communicate in a single language regardless of manufacturer.<\/p>\n<p>This trend was clearly evident at IFA 2026. LG Electronics showcased an &#8220;AI Home Ecosystem&#8221; centered on its humanoid home robot &#8220;Cloid,&#8221; where 31 appliances move organically like an orchestra. By connecting the AI home hub &#8220;ThinQ ON&#8221; with the &#8220;ThinQ&#8221; platform, the company demonstrated products and services across the living room, kitchen, bedroom, and bathroom adapting to users&#8217; lifestyles.<\/p>\n<p>Samsung Electronics moved its main exhibition stage to &#8220;Humboldt Carr\u00e9,&#8221; a convention center in downtown Berlin, presenting an AI ecosystem spanning TVs, appliances, and mobile devices under the theme &#8220;Your AI Daily Companion.&#8221; Chinese companies participated with over 900 exhibitors at this year&#8217;s IFA, approaching half of all participating companies, and showcased humanoid robots at their largest scale ever.<\/p>\n<p>As the pathways between devices widen, security at the gates becomes even more critical. No matter how sophisticated the encryption chips and firewalls, if a user sets their Wi-Fi router password to something simple like &#8220;12345678&#8221; or leaves the default password unchanged, it is no different from leaving the front door wide open.<\/p>\n<p>The easiest and most powerful security practice is regular software updates. Simply installing updates immediately\u2014without delay\u2014when a &#8220;new security update available&#8221; notification appears on your smartphone or appliance can block most new vulnerabilities that hackers exploit.
