South Korea’s cumulative exports for this year have already surpassed last year’s annual record in early September. With semiconductors accounting for more than 40% of total exports and driving growth, the possibility of achieving the country’s first-ever $1 trillion in annual exports is becoming increasingly realistic.<\/p>\n
According to South Korea’s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and the Korea Customs Service on September 5, cumulative exports for this year stood at $709.4 billion (approximately 958.5 trillion won) as of 1 p.m. that day. This exceeds last year’s record annual export total of $709.3 billion (approximately 958.3 trillion won). In effect, South Korea achieved in just over eight months what took all of last year to accomplish \u2014 reaching the milestone 117 days earlier.<\/p>\n
Korea Customs Service Commissioner Lee Jong-wook reported to President Lee Jae-myung: “Despite an uncertain trade environment marked by rising protectionism, global supply chain restructuring, and instability in the Middle East, South Korean exports continue to show remarkable growth.” President Lee shared the report on his social media account on X (formerly Twitter) to highlight the administration’s achievements.<\/p>\n
Semiconductors Drive Record-Breaking Performance<\/p>\n
Semiconductors are at the heart of this year’s export boom. Cumulative semiconductor exports through the end of August totaled $281.2 billion (approximately 379.9 trillion won), representing 40.6% of all exports \u2014 a 169.6% surge compared to the same period last year. Strong export performance led by major chipmakers such as Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix has lifted overall figures.<\/p>\n
Beyond semiconductors, exports of computer peripherals jumped 262.2%, while petroleum products (up 40.7%), wireless communication devices (up 28.1%), and ships (up 12.4%) also posted gains. In contrast, passenger vehicle exports fell 4.4% and auto parts declined 7.3%.<\/p>\n
By destination, growth was broad-based across major markets with the exception of the Middle East (down 9.8%). Exports to China surged 76.1%, while shipments to the United States rose 57.0%, Vietnam climbed 57.7%, and the European Union increased 19.0%.<\/p>\n
Monthly Records and the $1 Trillion Outlook<\/p>\n
South Korea’s exports set all-time monthly records in every month from January through August this year. Notably, in June, monthly exports surpassed $100 billion (approximately 135.1 trillion won) for the first time in history.<\/p>\n
Commissioner Lee Jong-wook projected that if the current export momentum continues, annual exports could reach $1 trillion (approximately 1,351.1 trillion won) around early December. Only three countries \u2014 the United States, China, and Germany \u2014 have ever exceeded $1 trillion in annual exports. If South Korea reaches this threshold this year, it would become the fourth country in the world to do so.<\/p>\n
South Korea’s annual exports declined from $683.6 billion (approximately 923.6 trillion won) in 2022 to $632.2 billion (approximately 854.2 trillion won) in 2023, before rebounding to $683.6 billion in 2024. Last year, exports reached $709.3 billion, surpassing the $700 billion mark (approximately 945.8 trillion won) for the first time. This year, that record was already broken in early September.<\/p>\n
However, external conditions remain challenging. The spread of protectionism, global supply chain restructuring, and geopolitical instability in the Middle East continue to pose risks to the export outlook.
