Yonhap News

BERLIN — Samsung Electronics unveiled an artificial intelligence-based “AI Promoter” that understands shopper questions and compares and recommends products at IFA 2026, Europe’s largest home appliance show held in Berlin. AI is moving beyond controlling appliance functions to take on the role of an “AI employee” that explains products and handles purchase consultations at brick-and-mortar stores.

A human-shaped AI avatar appeared on a large screen at Samsung’s exhibition hall at IFA 2026 on the 5th. When visitors speak into a microphone in front of the screen about the product they want or how they plan to use it, the AI Promoter selects products that match those conditions and explains their features.

Asked to recommend a product good for watching movies, it suggested an OLED TV. When told the visitor wanted a large 100-inch model, it picked and introduced a matching model among Samsung’s Micro RGB TVs.

The AI Promoter differs from typical guidance systems that only repeat preloaded answers. Built on a large language model (LLM), it grasps the intent behind a user’s question and then carries on a conversation based on product information. It can also switch languages mid-response. If a visitor is conversing in English and asks for an answer in Korean, it immediately provides an explanation in Korean.

The AI avatar on screen was rendered naturally enough to give the feel of talking with a real person. Visitors can ask questions through the microphone in front of the screen, or scan a QR code with their phone to continue the conversation on a smartphone.

Samsung plans to deploy the AI Promoter at actual retail stores. “We are testing a prototype with the European market launch in mind,” said Choi Sung-min, a professional in charge of CE retail at Samsung Electronics’ German unit.

Meanwhile, LG Electronics said at an IFA 2026 press briefing that it is moving in earnest to win robot component orders beyond home appliances. To that end, the company plans to establish mass production for LG Axium, its own brand of actuators, or drive components, for robots within this year.

“We have been making motors for 60 years and have the technology to make them more than 30% lighter than competitors,” Baek Seung-tae, head of LG Electronics’ HS Business Division, said that day. “We are also discussing actuator supply with big tech firms and plan to hold a meeting in October.” The company said it is producing the initial volume of Axium units at its plant in Changwon, South Gyeongsang Province.

On uncertainty surrounding the home appliance business, Baek stressed that the company has ample capacity to respond. “We can respond through a flexible production system, supply chain diversification, expanded long-term contracts and adjustments to production locations,” he said.

<img loading="lazy" alt="Baek Seung-tae, head of LG Electronics' Home Appliance Solution (HS) Division, speaks at a press briefing at IFA 2026, Europe's largest home appliance show, in Berlin, Germany, on Sept. 6 local time.
