Separately, the South Korean display maker is set to hold an internal review this month on &#8220;Flip,&#8221; an RGB OLED manufacturing technology that eliminates the need for fine metal masks (FMM), signaling that its two-track strategy for the large-format OLED business is taking concrete shape.<\/p>\n<p>According to industry sources on September 7, LG Display set up a private booth adjacent to LG Electronics&#8217; exhibition hall at IFA 2026 in Berlin and hosted the &#8220;2026 Tandem WOLED Tech Show.&#8221; Rather than building a separate exhibition pavilion, the company focused its efforts on sales activities targeting European customers, leveraging its latest OLED technology.<\/p>\n<p>At the private booth, the company reportedly discussed panel orders for large-format display products such as monitors and TVs with local B2B customers. Tandem technology\u2014which stacks the three primary colors of light, R (red), G (green), and B (blue), in independent layers\u2014was the centerpiece of the pitch. The technology delivers long lifespan, high brightness, and low power consumption. For large-format OLED panels used in monitors and TVs, Tandem WOLED combines tandem technology with the white (W) light source that is a signature characteristic of LG Display&#8217;s OLED technology.<\/p>\n<p>LG Display first unveiled the Tandem OLED technology brand to media at CES 2026, the world&#8217;s largest consumer electronics and IT trade show held in Las Vegas earlier this year. The IFA appearance marks the company&#8217;s transition to actively deploying the technology in real-world B2B sales.<\/p>\n<p>Non-FMM &#8216;Flip&#8217; Internal Review Imminent<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, LG Display plans to conduct an internal review this month on &#8220;Flip,&#8221; its non-FMM RGB OLED manufacturing technology. Flip was first unveiled at the International Meeting on Information Display (IMID 2026) held in Busan last month. The technology is characterized by horizontally depositing OLED emissive materials across the entire substrate surface, then using ultraviolet (UV) light in a photolithography process to remove material except where pixels will be formed.<\/p>\n<p>Multiple industry sources said, &#8220;LG Display recently showcased prototypes, but the company is still in the process of narrowing down specific application technologies and the types and specifications of equipment to be introduced. This internal review is expected to concretize the application technology, equipment, and conversion scale.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Industry observers anticipate that LG Display will finalize detailed technology and specifications and begin securing Flip-related equipment as early as the second or third quarter of next year. Even with maximum utilization of existing lines, new materials and processes suited to the Flip method must be introduced, requiring a procurement process.<\/p>\n<p>Paju 8.5-Generation Line Conversion Strategy<\/p>\n<p>LG Display is reportedly planning to convert an idle 8.5-generation large-format WOLED line at its Paju campus into a Flip-dedicated facility. The strategy is to secure 8th-generation RGB OLED production capacity by maximizing use of existing WOLED equipment, rather than making a new investment in an 8.6-generation FMM RGB OLED line.<\/p>\n<p>This approach offers advantages in capital efficiency compared to a greenfield investment, and enables faster execution. The key variable, however, is yield. Photolithography-based RGB OLED has been attempted by overseas players such as Japan&#8217;s JDI and China&#8217;s Visionox, but mass production viability has yet to be proven. Given that this represents a foray into new technology, the difficulty of securing quality and yield is expected to be considerably higher.<\/p>\n<p>Competitors&#8217; 8.6-Generation Line Status<\/p>\n<p>Competitors are also moving quickly in the large-format OLED market. Samsung Display and China&#8217;s BOE have built 8.6-generation FMM OLED lines. Visionox, a Chinese display maker, is building an 8.6-generation OLED line using a photolithography approach similar to LG Display&#8217;s, but with vertical deposition. CSOT, another Chinese panel maker, is investing in an 8.6-generation line that uses a differentiated inkjet method to form OLED pixels.<\/p>\n<p>LG Display&#8217;s dual approach\u2014maintaining its dominance in the existing large-format OLED market with Tandem WOLED while challenging a new process to realize RGB OLED without FMM through Flip\u2014is interpreted as a strategic move to secure both long-term cost competitiveness and technological differentiation.
