Photo courtesy of Samsung Electronics<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-[var(--color-text)] leading-relaxed\">Samsung Electronics (005930.KS) has completed the command structure for its robotics business by appointing Yoon Jang-hyun, chief technology officer of its Device eXperience (DX) division, to lead development of core humanoid technologies. The company plans to accelerate humanoid development with the goal of unveiling a product at CES 2027 in the United States early next year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-[var(--color-text)] leading-relaxed\">Samsung Electronics recently named Yoon as head of both the hardware development team and the artificial intelligence software development team at the Robotics (RX) Business Promotion Office, which reports directly to DX Division Head Roh Tae-moon, according to industry sources on the 8th. Yoon, a software and platform specialist, is regarded as the right person to lead development of AI software, the brain that enables a humanoid&#8217;s perception, judgment and autonomous movement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-[var(--color-text)] leading-relaxed\">Having Yoon oversee the hardware development team, which handles the movement of the humanoid&#8217;s body, is seen as an unusual choice. The move is read as an attempt to unify the business structure and speed up development. Under the traditional approach of building a mechanical frame first and layering software on top, it is impossible to keep pace with AI advances that change by the day. By giving full development authority to Yoon, a software expert, the company aims to build a custom humanoid optimized for AI algorithms from the initial design stage, sharply shortening the development period and raising the level of completion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-[var(--color-text)] leading-relaxed\">With this appointment, Samsung Electronics has completed the command structure of the RX Business Promotion Office. The office was created in July this year as the control tower for the company&#8217;s robotics business. In addition to the hardware and AI software development teams, the company recruited Executive Vice President Lee Dong-gun, formerly of Hyundai Motor Group, who led the acquisition of Boston Dynamics, as head of the strategy team, and Vice President Kim Eui-gyeom, an Ajou University professor with world-class research achievements, as head of the manipulation development team.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-[var(--color-text)] leading-relaxed\">Samsung Electronics has set a goal of upgrading the humanoid technologies it has accumulated, led by the RX Business Promotion Office, and unveiling a prototype at CES next year. The company secured the &#8220;SAMSUNG BOT&#8221; trademark in 2022 and filed a patent in 2024 for humanoid hip joint design technology, which determines the success or failure of bipedal walking, giving it a proprietary lower-body structure. In April this year, it registered a patent in the United States for a next-generation robot hand that combines camera vision to flexibly change finger arrangements according to the shape of an object.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-[var(--color-text)] leading-relaxed\">Samsung Electronics is rushing humanoid development because Chinese companies have recently stepped up their moves to seize the market first. Against rivals competing on speed and volume, the company&#8217;s plan is to bring everything in-house, from product design to the AI brain, and take command of the humanoid industry ecosystem at a stroke.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-[var(--color-text)] leading-relaxed\">Global humanoid shipments reached 19,100 units in the first half of this year, a 272% surge from a year earlier, according to market research firm Smart Analytics Global (SAG). Chinese companies accounted for more than 97% of that total. AgiBot, with a 44% share, took first place, followed by Unitree (31%), Galbot (5%), UBTech (4%) and LeJu (3%). More than 70% of humanoids in the first half were for industrial and commercial use.
