The increase would place new pressure on a power system already navigating electrification and the planned retirement of coal plants.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Electric vehicles will require more electricity as they replace gasoline-powered cars. Buildings are also expected to shift from gas heating to electric systems. Together, these changes are forcing the government to reconsider the scale and composition of future generation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An updated national energy roadmap is due to be unveiled next month. It will extend South Korea\u2019s planning horizon by two years to 2040. A central question is whether the government will authorize additional nuclear reactors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kim declined to specify how many reactors may be required. Experts are still reviewing the country\u2019s projected needs. Their components are critical to the data centres and computing systems behind AI services.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The companies have pledged to build factories in South Korea\u2019s southwest. The investments form part of an 800 trillion won ($590 billion) semiconductor project announced by the government this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cProjects originally planned to be built by around 2045 have been \u2060significantly accelerated and are now due to be completed by the early 2030s,\u201d Kim said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several US technology companies, including Nvidia, have also expressed interest in developing data centres in South Korea, according to Kim. He said the country\u2019s dependable electricity supply was an important attraction.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That reputation will become harder to maintain as large industrial users connect to the grid. The technology supplies just under one-third of the country\u2019s electricity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Public support for further construction appears strong at the national level. A Korea Energy Information Culture Agency poll found that 79% of 2,000 respondents supported including new plants in the roadmap.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Local opposition remains a governance risk. In May, a civic group in Ulsan collected more than 10,000 signatures against additional reactors, citing safety concerns. Ulsan has been identified as a potential location for new nuclear capacity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kim said the planned semiconductor cluster in the southwest was unlikely to require a dedicated new reactor. Six reactors already operate in the area, alongside solar and wind facilities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The greater challenge may be supplying Seoul and other demand centres that depend on power transmitted from the southwest. Kim said those regions could require more solar generation or liquefied natural gas plants.<\/p>\n<p>Coal phaseout creates a reliability test<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Renewables currently provide 11% of South Korea\u2019s electricity. Coal accounts for 29%, while gas contributes 27%.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The government intends to retire all 60 coal-fired power plants by 2040. However, 20 facilities will remain within their legal design lives after that deadline. Officials are considering whether to retain them as emergency backup.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s a kind of safety power reserve. You never know what might happen, so completely dismantling everything could put us in a difficult situation,\u201d Kim said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For executives and investors, the roadmap will influence industrial siting, power costs and long-term infrastructure risk. It will also test whether South Korea can reconcile AI-led growth with its climate commitments.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The outcome will matter beyond the country\u2019s borders.
