Wall Street’s three main indexes all fell overnight as heightened military tension in the Middle East drove up oil prices and bond yields. Yet a South Korean exchange-traded fund, the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index and SK hynix’s American depositary receipts all rose, pointing to sharp divergence within the chip sector. Korean stocks now face a test of whether they can retake the 7,000 mark on the KOSPI, caught between macro headwinds and strength in memory chips.

Samsung Electronics (005930) rose 0.37%, SK hynix (000660) gained 1.12% and Samsung Electro-Mechanics (009150) advanced 1.68% in pre-market trading, with all 10 of the most valuable listed companies moving higher, according to Nextrade data on the 9th. The KOSPI opened strong the previous day and approached 7,200 at one point in the afternoon, but closed down 0.58% at 6,954.52 as retail investors unloaded shares, failing to recover the 7,000 level.

Geopolitical risk stemming from the Middle East came back into focus overnight, pulling all three major U.S. indexes lower. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed 1.18% lower at 52,786.07 on the 8th. The Standard & Poor’s 500 fell 0.58% to 7,673.52, and the technology-heavy Nasdaq slipped 0.32% to 26,421.41.

Concerns over crude supply disruptions spread as armed clashes widened, with Yemen’s Houthi rebels claiming a strike on Saudi Aramco energy facilities and U.S. forces carrying out an airstrike on a small Iranian tanker. On the New York Mercantile Exchange, West Texas Intermediate crude futures for October delivery rose 1.69% to $93.03 a barrel, while Brent for November delivery gained 0.95% to $97.92 a barrel, threatening the $100 level. The surge in oil prices, combined with caution ahead of the U.S. consumer price index for August due on the 11th, pushed the 10-year Treasury yield up to 4.805%, back above 4.8%.

Chip stocks advanced even as the broader indexes retreated and worries about a resurgence in inflation persisted. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index closed up 1.30%. Within the sector, however, performance diverged. Intel jumped 9.10% on central processing unit price increases and expectations it would benefit from Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk’s terafab plans, while AMD rose 5.90% and Broadcom gained 3.00%.

Nvidia, down 2.00%, and Micron, down 1.61%, closed lower on profit-taking after sharp short-term gains. Seagate rose 6.49% on expanding demand for artificial intelligence storage, and SK hynix’s ADR extended its rally with a 4.83% gain. Analysts attribute the strength in the ADR to reports in Asian markets that memory chip inventories at Samsung Electronics and SK hynix had fallen below 10 days.

Brokerages say the domestic market is working through selling pressure before settling above 7,000. The KOSPI attempted to break through the level in intraday trading the previous day but surrendered all of its gains as profit-taking orders poured in. Retail investors sold a net 9.8 trillion won ($7.3 billion) worth of shares on the KOSPI over the past two trading sessions, capping the index. Foreign and institutional investors, along with other corporate entities buying as Samsung Electronics and SK hynix repurchase their own shares, have been absorbing the retail selling. Foreign investors bought a net 1.3 trillion won ($970 million) worth of shares between Sept. 1 and Sept. 8.

Despite the weak tone in U.S. equities, analysts describe conditions for Korean stocks as favorable, citing a shift in the KOSPI’s investor mix and supportive currency levels. KOSPI night-session futures closed 0.8% higher, and the one-month dollar-won non-deliverable forward traded at 1,340.70 won, below the previous day’s Seoul foreign exchange market close of 1,345.60 won. “Volatility is unavoidable given oil price jitters from the Middle East and caution over inflation data, but compared with past periods of conflict, downward pressure on equities has clearly eased,” said Han Ji-young, an analyst at Kiwoom Securities (039490). “Earnings growth momentum in the AI industry has been sustained since the release of OpenAI’s GPT-6, and the earnings strength of listed companies has not been damaged. The current resistance at 7,000 is not a break from the uptrend but a process of preparing for a further rebound.”

An employee checks the KOSPI index and the won-dollar exchange rate at Hana Infinite Seoul in Hana Bank’s…

[20
3870,75001,8909,5349,276,241,275,30351
post-147877","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-sk-hynix","tag-kospi-7000","tag-memory-chip-inventories","tag-philadelphia-semiconductor-index","tag-pre-market-trading","tag-samsung-electronics","tag-sk","tag-sk-hynix","tag-wti-crude
["GET
