North Korea\u2019s ruling Workers\u2019 Party<\/a> of Korea (WPK) central committee ordered a full replacement of staff managing foreign student dormitories at Kim Il Sung<\/a> University<\/a> after male students<\/a> broke into the facilities without authorization in early April.<\/p>\n

A Daily NK source in Pyongyang<\/a> said Wednesday that the central committee issued a directive early this month ordering a comprehensive overhaul of the university\u2019s system<\/a> for housing<\/a> and managing foreign students. The order came directly in response to the unauthorized dormitory entry incident.<\/p>\n

Kim Il Sung University, located in Pyongyang, is North Korea\u2019s most prestigious institution of higher learning and the country\u2019s flagship state university. Its foreign student dormitories house international students, making access control a politically sensitive matter for the regime.<\/p>\n

\u201cAccess control for foreign student dormitories is an extremely sensitive issue because it<\/a> involves contact with outsiders,\u201d the source said. \u201cThis particular incident was especially serious because the students involved included the children<\/a> of senior officials<\/a> and top academic achievers, and the full details have not come to light.\u201d<\/p>\n

The source added that the faculty member responsible for student supervision had been completely unaware the incident had occurred. As a result, it was not reported to the central committee until early May, weeks after the fact.<\/p>\n
