{"id":19928,"date":"2026-05-17T15:17:30","date_gmt":"2026-05-17T15:17:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/korea\/19928\/"},"modified":"2026-05-17T15:17:30","modified_gmt":"2026-05-17T15:17:30","slug":"ai-boom-puts-sk-hynix-on-the-cusp-of-1-trillion-market-value","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/korea\/19928\/","title":{"rendered":"AI boom puts SK Hynix on the cusp of $1 trillion market value"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/topic\/sk-hynix\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">SK Hynix<\/a> is on the verge of topping a $1 trillion market value, just weeks after <a href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/topic\/samsung-electronics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Samsung Electronics<\/a> crossed the milestone, as strong demand for <a href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/topic\/artificial-intelligence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">artificial intelligence<\/a> places South Korea at the heart of Asia&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/topic\/ai-boom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">AI boom<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>SK Hynix shares have risen more than 200% this year, after rising an eye-watering \u200c274% in 2025, \u2060driven \u2060by AI-related demand for both conventional memory chips and high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips used in AI servers. <\/p>\n<p>If SK Hynix joins Samsung above the trillion-dollar threshold, South Korea would become the first country outside the United States to have more than one trillion-dollar company.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The market is running on FOMO sentiments, especially on AI-related names in Japan and Korea,&#8221; said Fabien Yip, market analyst at IG in \u2060Sydney. <\/p>\n<p>Samsung became \u200cKorea&#8217;s first trillion-dollar company earlier this month, although Taiwan&#8217;s TSMC remains Asia&#8217;s biggest company by market value at over $1.83 trillion.<\/p>\n<p>The three chipmakers \u2060and their record earnings have put the spotlight on their critical role in the <a href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/topic\/global-ai-supply-chain\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">global AI supply chain<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>South Korea&#8217;s benchmark <a href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/topic\/kospi-index\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">KOSPI index<\/a> has climbed in near-vertical fashion, hitting record highs as foreign investors both big and small have poured into chipmakers. <\/p>\n<p>The index is up more than 86% this year, after soaring 75% in 2025 in its strongest annual performance since 1999. Since the start of 2025, the KOSPI \u200chas been the best-performing major stock market in the world. <\/p>\n<p>SK Hynix, worth less than $100 billion 16 months ago, is now closing in on the market values of \u2060retail giant Walmart and Berkshire Hathaway, the investment vehicle of the legendary investor Warren Buffett.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, SK Hynix shares edged down 0.48% while Samsung rose more than 3% to a record high, in a broader market that was up 0.9% &#8211; not far from the record high it reached earlier this week.
