{"id":22286,"date":"2026-05-19T10:16:07","date_gmt":"2026-05-19T10:16:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/korea\/22286\/"},"modified":"2026-05-19T10:16:07","modified_gmt":"2026-05-19T10:16:07","slug":"chinas-rapid-chipmaking-expansion-threatens-ai-memory-chip-boom-samsung-adviser-warns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/korea\/22286\/","title":{"rendered":"China\u2019s rapid chipmaking expansion threatens AI memory chip boom, Samsung adviser warns"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The AI-driven \u201csuper cycle\u201d in memory chips may lose momentum by 2028 as Chinese chipmakers aggressively expand production and global tech firms curb spending, a <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/topics\/samsung-electronics?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Samsung Electronics<\/a> executive adviser said.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">\u201cSouth Korea\u2019s memory chip industry is performing very strongly this year and some forecasts suggest conditions could improve further next year,\u201d adviser Kyung Kye-hyun said at a forum hosted by the National Academy of Engineering of Korea. \u201cBut caution is needed for 2027, particularly 2028.\u201d<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Kyung, who led Samsung\u2019s semiconductor business from December 2021 to May 2024, identified the rapid expansion of Chinese chipmakers\u2019 manufacturing capacity as a major challenge for South Korean chipmakers.<\/p>\n<p>Chinese firms had already captured about 20 per cent of the NAND flash market, he noted, adding that their share of the DRAM market could exceed 10 per cent with support from <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/tech\/tech-trends\/article\/3353988\/cxmts-blowout-earnings-outlook-fuels-rally-chinese-memory-chip-stocks?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">\u201cChinese companies are planning to increase capacity by 300,000 wafers over the next three years, and I\u2019m concerned this could allow them to capture around 12 to 13 per cent market share,\u201d Kyung said on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Korean chipmakers \u2013 including Samsung and <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/tech\/big-tech\/article\/3352001\/samsung-sk-hynix-flag-record-supply-squeeze-memory-market-ai-demand-soars?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">SK Hynix<\/a> \u2013 are enjoying strong earnings thanks to surging demand for memory chips, a crucial bottleneck for AI data centres.
