JASPER COUNTY, Texas (KETK<\/a>) \u2014 More than 70 years after he fell in battle in Korea, U.S. Army Cpl. Orestus M. Stewart of Magnolia Springs has finally been identified, federal officials announced Friday.<\/p>\n

Stewart was serving with Medical Company, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division when he was killed in action on Aug. 11, 1950, near Kyong\u2011ju, Republic of Korea, during an operation to seize Yonil Airfield.<\/p>\n

The Defense POW\/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) said his remains were not recovered after the battle, and in 1956, he was declared nonrecoverable.<\/p>\n

In April 1954, however, Army personnel and South Korean citizens recovered a set of remains from a shallow grave near Pugni\u2011dong. The Central Identification Unit in Kokura, Japan, compared those remains to unresolved U.S. casualties from the area but could not make a match to Stewart.<\/p>\n

The remains were later interred at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, also known as the Punchbowl, in Honolulu.<\/p>\n

As part of the DPAA\u2019s ongoing effort to identify Korean War Unknowns, the agency disinterred those remains in 2022 and transferred them to its laboratory for analysis. Stewart was identified through anthropological examination and mitochondrial DNA testing.<\/p>\n

Stewart will be buried in his hometown on Sunday. A rosette will be placed next to his name in the Courts of the Missing at the Punchbowl, signifying that he has been accounted for.<\/p>\n
