Yonhap News

The Bank of Korea’s Monetary Policy Board (MPB) is widely expected to keep its base rate at the current 2.50% when it meets on Nov. 28, though its forward guidance is likely to take a hawkish tone given rising home prices and a won-dollar exchange rate that has climbed into the 1,500 won range.

According to the Bank of Korea on Monday, the MPB will hold its monetary policy decision meeting on Nov. 28 to set the base rate. It will be the first meeting since Governor Shin took office. Markets broadly expect the base rate to remain unchanged.

While inflation pressures persist amid the fallout from the Middle East conflict, a clear domestic demand recovery has yet to materialize, making an immediate rate hike difficult. A hold would mark the eighth consecutive freeze, following decisions in July, August, October and November of last year and in January, February and April of this year.

Even if the MPB keeps the rate steady, observers increasingly expect its message on the future direction of monetary policy to be more hawkish than before. The need for a rate hike has grown amid rising home prices in the Seoul metropolitan area and a won-dollar exchange rate that has climbed into the 1,500 won range.

According to Yonhap News, economic experts said the MPB is likely to strongly signal a future hike even if it holds the rate this time. “We expect the bank to provide a rate hike signal given improving growth, continued increases in real estate prices and upside concerns over inflation,” said Ahn Ye-ha, senior researcher at Kiwoom Securities.

Jang Min, a senior research fellow, said, “Since this is Governor Shin’s first MPB meeting, the likelihood of a minority opinion calling for a hike is low,” adding, “There is a possibility that Governor Shin could deliver a strong hike signal at the press conference.”

A “dot plot” showing each of the seven MPB members’ base rate projections for six months ahead will also be released right after the meeting, and some expect it to differ from February’s, when “hold” views dominated. In February, of the 21 dots in total, 16 pointed to 2.50% (hold), four to 2.25% (cut) and one to 2.75% (hike), but this time the “cut” view could disappear entirely.

“Holds will narrowly outnumber hikes at 11 to 10, but I expect the overall tone to shift in a way that takes the possibility of a hike into account,” said Park Jung-woo, an economist at Nomura Securities. Jang Min, senior research fellow at the Korea Institute of Finance, also said, “The overall distribution will move considerably higher,” adding, “I expect most of the dots to be plotted on the hike side.”

Bank of Korea Governor Shin Hyun-song delivers his inaugural address at the inauguration ceremony held at the Bank…

[456
845,12729,846,862,18576,18577,18578,2397,850
post-27768","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-bank-of-korea","tag-bank-of-korea","tag-base-rate","tag-bok","tag-dot-plot","tag-governor-shin","tag-hawkish","tag-korea-housing-prices","tag-monetary-policy-board","tag-won-dollar-exchange-rate
["GET
