The employee vote on the tentative wage agreement between Samsung Electronics (005930.KS) and its union is approaching a 90% turnout, with both supporting and opposing camps intensifying their rallies.<\/p>\n

If the agreement passes, an unprecedented bonus averaging 600 million won per person will be confirmed for the memory business division, prompting growing demands for improved compensation from other Samsung affiliates where reward levels are relatively smaller.<\/p>\n

According to industry sources on Tuesday, the union member turnout reached 87.93% as of 4:30 p.m., the fourth day of voting on the tentative agreement. At this pace, turnout is expected to reach around 90% by the deadline on the 27th. The union has been voting since the 22nd on the labor-management agreement, which includes provisions for paying 10.5% of business performance as a special management performance bonus.<\/p>\n

Observers expect the Device Solutions (DS) division, which accounts for 84% of union members, to lead the approval. However, the potential defection of union members in the non-memory sector within the DS division, where bonuses fall significantly short of 600 million won, remains a variable.<\/p>\n

As Samsung Electronics’ unprecedented compensation scale takes shape, employees at other affiliates that have already concluded wage negotiations are pushing back and demanding stronger compensation. Samsung Electro-Mechanics (009150.KS) labor and management will hold discussions next month to revamp the bonus calculation criteria. With internal pushback emerging as bonuses amounted to only a few percent of annual salary, the proposal is to shift from the existing Economic Value Added (EVA) method to an operating profit basis, following Samsung Electronics.<\/p>\n

Samsung Display is also set to begin labor-management consultations on introducing alternative compensation systems to replace bonuses in the second half. With Samsung Electronics’ non-memory business division expected to receive bonuses in the 100 million won range despite operating losses, fairness disputes have emerged at Samsung SDI (006400.KS), which is suffering from poor performance. The Samsung Biologics (207940.KS) union is engaged in a work-to-rule campaign following a recent strike, and the construction division of Samsung C&T (028260.KS) raised its wage increase rate to 4.3% out of concern over a potential strike.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Donghaeng, the third union composed mainly of non-semiconductor employees at Samsung Electronics, plans to file an injunction at the Suwon District Court on the 26th to halt the voting procedure.
